Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Havaneses is that they are incredibly adaptable to nearly any lifestyle or living arrangement. While initial histories of the breed say they were used to hunt rodents and other pests, these adaptable dogs have also become beloved family companions. Their fluffy, light-shedding coats make them perfect lapdogs, as they don’t shed dander and fur like other breeds but they are also active and playful enough to enjoy long walks or jogs with an active owner.
Havaneses are a hypoallergenic breed, meaning that they have a lower chance than other breeds of causing allergic reactions. Generally, there is still a chance that someone could be allergic, as there is for any animal or breed. If someone has known allergies, it’s best to take precautions, such as spending time around the Havaneses prior to adoption, to ensure there isn’t a reaction before taking the pet home.
Feeding your Havanese the proper diet is essential for your pup's overall health and well-being. Generally, an adult Havanese should be fed a high-quality dry dog food that is appropriate for their age and size. When picking a brand, look for one recommended by professionals and contains whole-grain carbohydrates, and proteins from poultry, fish, and lamb. Make sure it also has healthy fats such as Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, as well as an array of fresh fruits and vegetables that provide trace minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants.
Making sure your home is ready to welcome the new addition to your family is very important. Before your Havanese arrives, do some preparation to ensure that it gains a feeling of comfort and safety right away. Start by pet-proofing your home this includes checking for any items that may be hazardous to the dog. Make sure to all the necessary supplies and items that you may need ahead of time, such as a pet bed, food and water bowls, toys, treats, grooming items and collar while also planning for frequent vet visits.
Havaneses are a small-sized toy breed of dog typically ranging between seven and eight inches in height. Generally speaking, their weight is usually between seven and twelve pounds and their coats are relatively short and wavy. However, due to their breeding, their coat can come in many different textures and lengths depending on the individual pup's genetics, so exact sizes can vary. Moreover, all Havaneses do not necessarily have the same size or body shape.
It is recommended that Havanese owners spend at least 30 minutes a day walking their pup. This will help keep your Havanese healthy, stimulate their growth, and build strong bonds between you and your pup. Walking your Havanese for 30 minutes will help your pup burn off any unnecessary energy and maintain good physical health. Not to mention, it will also be beneficial for your pup’s mental health by boosting their confidence and mood. As with other breeds, the amount of exercise a Havanese needs may vary depending on age, size, and activity level.
Havaneses can get along with children very well. In general, Havaneses are friendly and social and should do well with older kids, reacting happily when interacting with them. Ultimately, the amount of interaction between Havaneses and children comes down to the individual animal's personality and the parents' willingness to work with their Havaneses puppy for proper socialization. Families are encouraged to introduce children to their Havaneses puppies in a slow, controlled fashion for the best outcomes. Havaneses may need to learn, through positive reinforcement, how to be gentle and accepting of kids.
Training your Havanese is not always easy. Havanese dogs are known to be extremely intelligent but they can be quite stubborn. It is important to use positive reinforcement when training your Havanese, as they respond more favorably to praise and reward-based training. Establishing a routine and setting boundaries is very important in helping your Havanese stay focused during training sessions. Begin by teaching your Havanese basic, simple commands such as "sit", "stay", and "come", and try to keep each session short and fun.
