Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small and increasingly popular breed of companion dog that originated in Cuba. They are intelligent, people-oriented dogs that are loyal and affectionate companions. Fun facts about Havaneses include that: they are considered one of the oldest toy breeds, with a history that dates back to the Middle Ages; they are able to quickly learn and understand commands; and they are at ease in social settings and enjoy playing and interacting with other people and animals.
Havaneses are generally considered to be hypoallergenic. While no dog can be said to be 100% hypoallergenic, because allergies can be triggered by different elements in a breed's coat, Havaneses have been selectively bred to minimize the chance of producing allergic reactions. They have a silky coat which does not shed much and which produces very little dander. The hair on their long, matted-looking tails is softer than the rest of their coats, which helps reduce even more the potential allergen production.
Feeding your Havanese a balanced and nutritious diet is important in keeping them healthy. It is recommended to feed your Havanese high-quality dry kibble or a wet food diet that is free of grain, filler, and by-product meals. Opt for a diet rich in natural proteins like fish, poultry, or beef and be sure to check labels for quality ingredients with amino acids, taurine, and vitamins for optimal health. You may also want to add supplemental fresh, raw, or lightly steamed vegetables to their diet to provide additional vitamins and minerals.
To become the best possible puppy parent for a Havanese, it's important to provide consistent support and education. Establish a routine and stick to it; having your pup on a regular schedule can help them learn faster and improve their behavior. Give positive reinforcement and be patient; Havanese are smart, outgoing little dogs, but they do need time to adjust to a new home. Socialization is important; introducing your Havanese puppy to new people and animal friends early on can prevent potential aggression or anxieties. Make sure you groom them properly and according to their needs.
Havaneses typically have a height range of between 8 to 11 inches when fully grown and a weight range of 7 to 13 pounds. The American Kennel Club specifies that the breed should have a "compact body that is both well-boned and snub-nosed," with its head being larger than its body. Depending on their sex, they can have slightly different sizes, with male Havaneses often being larger than females. The size of a Havaneses ultimately depends on the individual, but they typically remain within the standard range.
Generally, Havanese dogs should receive at least 30-45 minutes of exercise daily for optimal health. Walking your Havanese can help to provide necessary physical activity and mental stimulation. A good guideline to follow is to plan for around three 15-minute walks a day. You may also want to consider breaking up the walks into several short walks during the day instead of one longer walk. This can help provide additional mental stimulation which can be beneficial for their mental health. Be sure the environment is comfortable and safe when planning your walks and also provide plenty of potty breaks throughout the day.
Havaneses tend to get along quite well with other pets in the household. Typically these playful little dogs make fast friends with other animals, though of course it will depend on the individual pet. In multi-pet households, it is essential to socialize all of the animals as soon as possible in order to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone. Introducing the pets slowly and supervising their introduction can help build a strong relationship between the Havaneses and other pets in the home.
The amount of time you spend training your Havanese daily depends on the individual pet and the goals you're trying to achieve. For basic commands and behaviors like sit, stay, and walking on a leash, you may find that 10-15 minutes per day is sufficient. However, if your goal is advanced skills like trick training or agility, you may need to increase that time to 30-50 minutes.
