Questions & Answers
Havanese dogs are a small breed originating from Cuba. They were once a favorite of Cuban aristocrats and were highly favored members of the Cuban nobility. Fun facts about Havaneses include: they are the national dog of Cuba, love human companionship, and have a natural tendency to make people laugh, due to their enthusiasm and clownish behavior. Their intelligence and adaptability means they can learn to fetch, do agility competitions, and even learn sign language. Despite their small size, they are very strong swimmers who enjoy being around water.
It is not impossible for Havaneses to cause an allergy in some people but it is highly unlikely. Allergies are generally breed specific and Havaneses are not a breed known to provoke allergies or have high allergen levels. That said, if you have a known sensitivity to pets then it may be wise to do an allergy trial with the Havaneses breed before committing to owning one. This would allow you to gauge if you are likely to experience any allergy symptoms.
It is not recommended to feed a Havaneses certain foods including onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, chocolate, and alcohol as these can be harmful and lead to serious health issues. Additionally, you should avoid giving Havaneses foods with high fat content, like fatty meats, poultry skin, sausage, butter, and lard, as this can lead to digestive problems, weight gain, and other health issues. To keep your Havaneses healthy, stick to a diet made up of balanced, nutritious, and high-quality dog food.
Becoming the best possible puppy parent for your Havanese can be accomplished by providing your pup with a few simple things: a safe environment with age appropriate toys, plenty of exercise and playtime, socialization to different people and environments, and regular visits to the vet for check ups. Additionally, be sure to feed your pup healthy, high quality food so they get the nutritional support they need for proper growth and development. Also, provide positive training and set a consistent routine, so your Havanese knows what to expect.
Your Havanese puppy will reach an average adult size between 8-11 inches tall, and 7-13 pounds when full grown. Generally, it will take your puppy a couple of years to reach its full size. Since no two puppies are exactly alike, the exact size of your Havanese puppy can vary. While the average full grown size is consistent, some puppies may be a few inches taller or a few pounds heavier at full maturity. In general, Havanese puppies are small dogs with long, wavy fur that is often compared to that of a teddy bear.
Yes, Havaneses like to swim, as it's an activity that they enjoy. Swimming is a great form of exercise that helps keep them fit, happy and healthy. Not only that, but Havaneses also naturally gravitate towards the water, making it an activity that they can enjoy in a variety of ways. Swimming can provide an outlet for them to release excess energy and explore new places, as well as a way for them to bond with their owners.
Havaneses can make wonderful family dogs; they're incredibly affectionate and playful. They are considered non-shedding, hypoallergenic dogs that have the same intelligence as a much larger breed a combination that makes them great companions for any family. They are naturally quite protective of their family and don't bark as frequently as other breeds, making them ideal for apartment living. Additionally, they are very alert and respond well to training. They excel at learning tricks or following commands, so they can be quite fun for the whole family.
Training a Havanese can be easy depending on the situation. For example, if you have prior experience with small breed dogs and a good understanding of canine psychology, then the process may be relatively straightforward. That said, even when equipped with useful resources and knowledge, different dogs may require different approaches depending on their unique personalities and expectations, and staying consistent in your training is key. It's also important to remember that as intelligent and trainable as the Havanese is, patience is key and it may take longer for them to learn certain commands.
