As an owner you must make sure they get a lot of attention, both mental and physical. They can make great obedient pets if given the proper training and put into a routine.
Havaneses are considered a low-shedding breed, but that doesn't mean they shed minimally. Yes, they are a non-shedding breed, but just like other dogs, they do need routine grooming in order to keep their coat looking good and their skin healthy. Generally, a Havaneses will only shed slightly during shedding season, which typically lasts a few weeks. During this time, it's important to brush your pup daily to remove any loose or dead fur. When done properly, the amount of shedding and dander from Havaneses is considered very minimal.
It is important to take care when feeding a Havaneses as they are a small breed that is particularly sensitive to certain foods. Foods that should be avoided include chocolate, sweets, onions, garlic, raw meats or fish, processed foods, and any foods that are high in fat or salt. Moreover, fruits such as avocados, macadamia nuts, or raisins, as well as some vegetables, can cause gastrointestinal problems in Havaneses and should therefore be avoided or fed in very small amounts.
Before adopting a Havanese, it's important to be well-prepared. You'll need some essential items like a bed for your pup, a crate, and a set of bowls for food and water. You'll also want to pick up some chew toys, treats, and a leash. Grooming items, such as a brush, nail clippers, shampoo, and ear cleaner are a must. Additionally, you'll need a healthy supply of dog food and some type of joint supplement if your pup is elderly.
Havaneses are generally considered to be a small breed of dog. On average, an adult Havaneses will range between 7-13 pounds and will grow to a height of 9-11 inches. Generally speaking, it is possible to take your Havanese running, however it is important to consider their unique needs prior to doing so. Depending on the age and physical capabilities of your Havanese, you may want to discuss the matter with your veterinarian first. Seeing as Havanese are small breeds, they generally need much less exercise than larger breeds and may be more susceptible to the harsh conditions associated with running outdoors for extended periods of time. Furthermore, you should take heed of the climate and terrain where you live and take your Havanese running accordingly.
Generally speaking, Havaneses do very well in the presence of other animals, including cats and other dogs. They tend to be very friendly and outgoing. While all animals should undergo an appropriate introduction period to allow them to become familiar with one another and establish boundaries, Havaneses usually show quick acceptance and willingness to form relationships with other animals. They are highly adaptable and intelligent dogs, so they should have no difficulty in understanding and getting along with another pet. Additionally, Havaneses thrive on social activities and companionship, thus their interaction with other pets can become a mutually fulfilling experience.
Training a Havanese requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Before you start training your pup, familiarize yourself with training techniques and terminology. Begin training with basic commands such as "sit", "stay", and "come" and make sure to reward your dog when they respond correctly. As they become more comfortable and responsive to commands, progress to more advanced commands such as teaching your pup to heel or drop something on command. Use leashes and treats to motivate your pup and, if possible, have a friend help you.
