Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a friendly toy dog, known as a Bichon type, alert, gentle and intelligent. The breed is native to Cuba and is the country's only native breed. Havanese make good companions for a wide range of people, and do exceptionally well in city and suburban environments. They are social, affectionate, and love being around people and especially their owners. Although they don't require a lot of exercise, they enjoy going out for walks and playtime. With plenty of grooming and training, a Havanese will fit nicely into any home.
The Havanese coat is medium-length and can vary in texture from wavy to curly. The coat is also very soft and silky, with colors ranging from almost pure white to almost black, as well as a wide variety of shades of beige, cinnamons, chocolates, and gray in between. The breed is known for little to no shedding, so the coat is non-allergenic. The breed also requires little maintenance other than regular brushing and combing.
It's important to provide Havaneses with nutritious and balanced meals. However, there are certain foods that should be avoided, as they can cause digestive upset or could even be toxic for them. To keep your Havaneses safe, avoid providing them with onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, chocolate, alcohol, raw yeast, raw fish, excessive salt, and high-fat meats or fish. Certain breads, cheeses, and other dairy products should also be avoided, as cheese and certain breads may contain a lot of fat.
Yes, Havanese do have certain needs that should be addressed in order to keep them healthy and happy. Regular brushing and periodic trimming of their coats is necessary to maintain their coats' health. Additionally, daily walks and playtime with toys is important to keeping them mentally and physically stimulated. They also need regular veterinary care to ensure they stay as healthy as possible, including vaccinations and annual or semi-annual check-ups. Finally, they need attention and companionship from their owners, so they should be someone who is willing to invest the time necessary to provide that.
Havaneses are definitely considered to be a medium-sized dog breed. Generally, they are about 8-12 inches high at the shoulder and weigh anywhere from 7-13 pounds. While they may be small in size, they have big personalities! They are known for being alert, playful, and multi-talented, often excelling in agility, trick-performing, and obedience competitions. They make excellent family dogs because they get along well with people and other animals, and their small size makes them suitable for homes of all sizes.
Absolutely! Havaneses are active, fun-loving dogs who enjoy spending time outdoors and playing with their owners. They make excellent family pets due to their friendly nature and need for plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation. Even though Havaneses are a breed known for being small, their energy and stamina can be quite impressive. With their love for play and adventure, they can be hard to keep up with at times, but it's all worth it to experience the joy and love that these dogs bring to their families.
Generally speaking, Havaneses get along great with kids. These friendly and intelligent dogs are known for their patient, endearing personalities, which make them perfect for living with children of all ages. They love to play games with and learn from children, making them an ideal companion for children of all ages. They tend to be loyal, trusting, and welcoming of others, and they love cuddling up to the kids. Havaneses also tend to be hypoallergenic, which is important for parents with children that may have allergies.
The amount of time needed to effectively train a Havanese varies depending on the individual dog. Generally, if you want to train your Havanese, it's recommended to start off with at least 15 minutes per day of learning and reinforcing basic commands like sit, stay, and come. You can gradually increase this amount of time to 30 or even 45 minutes as your pup progresses and becomes more engaged in the activities. Additionally, it's important to include playtime as part of the training in order to keep your Havanese motivated and happy.
