Despite being the National Dog of Cuba, they originated in the Mediterranean and are thought to have been introduced to Cuba from the Canary Islands. They were favored as pet dogs by Cuban aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries. Because of their long, fluffy coats they were dubbed 'Habeneros' as a way to honor the Cuban city, Havana. Additionally, these dogs are known for their outgoing and friendly personalities, making them wonderful companions.
