Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a toy-sized breed of dog that is part of the Bichon family. These little dogs are small but sturdy and full of energy with a happy, intelligent, and curious personality. They have a soft, silky coat that may be either curly or straight, and come in multiple colors, such as white, black, cream, silver, gold, and brindle. Perfectly content as companions or lap dogs, Havaneses make popular house pets due to their intelligence and devotion to their families.
A Havanaese will not normally cause you to have allergies, however anything can cause allergies to an individual. Generally, the Havanaese breed does not have an inordinate amount of dander nor produce much fur in comparison to other breeds. While the possibility of an allergic reaction to any pet cannot be overtly ruled out, this particular breed is one of the least likely to generate an allergic reaction in a sensitive individual. That said, some people are more sensitive than others and it is always best to consult a medical professional to determine if sensitivity or allergies exist towards any new pet before a selection is made.
Feeding your Havanese should be tailored to his or her specific dietary needs. Generally, your veterinarian will recommend an age-appropriate type of food that's based on your little pup's size, age, overall health, and lifestyle. Dry kibble is the most typical diet for a Havanese, but you can also feed him or her wet food, frozen diets, dehydrated meals, fruits, vegetables, and more. Make sure to supplement the diet with fortified vitamins and minerals, too, as Havanese are known for their sensitive stomachs.
Prior to bringing your new Havanese home, it is important to ensure that your home is prepared and ready. Start by creating a safe space for your new pup by puppy-proofing your home; remove any objects or materials that are hazardous and could harm your pup. Make sure that all areas are adequately cleaned and that an area of the home, such as a room, is set up and dedicated to your pup; this will include their bed, toys, food and water bowls, and any other essential items they will need.
Havaneses come in small, medium, and large sizes. Generally, small sized Havaneses weigh 8-14 pounds, medium sized ones are between 15-20 pounds, and large ones are from 21-25 pounds. Like other breeds, their size can also vary depending on if they are male or female. Both male and female Havaneses typically stand between 8-11 inches tall and their coat is typically curly and wavy. They also tend to have strong hindquarters which gives them the appearance of being longer than they are tall.
Absolutely! Havaneses are highly active dogs – with the right level of exercise, they are capable of staying happy and healthy. These dogs are intelligent and are eager to please their owners, they learn quickly and respond to commands very quickly. On top of that, they enjoy trying new activities and don't tire easily due to their high energy levels. That makes Havaneses ideal for activities such as competing in agility, obedience, or rally challenges, long walks, and games of fetch or chasing.
Havaneses are renowned for their friendly personalities and can be great companions for children. They make loyal, loving and intelligent friends and can be easily trained. Their small size can make them gentle and non-threatening to young children. While they are naturally good with kids, their interaction should be supervised by an adult to make sure nobody gets hurt. Furthermore, introducing them to children gradually in a similar way you would any other breed is recommended in order to get the best socialization results.
Training Havaneses typically requires between 10 and 20 minutes per day depending on your pup's age. Generally, puppies should be trained for a minimum of 10 minutes each day, while adult dogs should receive up to 20 minutes daily. These requirements can also vary depending on your pup's level of energy—if your Havaneses is a low-energy pup, 10 minutes per day is often enough. On the other hand, if they're an energetic pup, you may need to double that time commitment.
