Questions & Answers
Havaneses are small, intelligent, and loyal companions. They have been bred to be affectionate lapdogs and make great additions to any family. They have a lot of energy and need daily exercise to stay healthy. Their long, silky fur is low-maintenance and only needs to be brushed or combed once or twice a week. They are relatively easy to train, but they may try to dominate the household if not given proper leadership. They are social, loving to be around other people and animals, and will quickly become the life of the party.
Generally speaking, Havaneses are considered to be hypoallergenic due to their low-shedding, naturally curly coats. They shed a minimal amount of dander (dead skin cells), making them a suitable breed for individuals sensitive to allergens. However, be aware that no breed of dog can be completely hypoallergenic. While genetics plays a large role when it comes to a breed's tendency to cause reactions, the environmental conditions in which the pup is kept can also contribute.
Feeding Havaneses the wrong type of food can cause long-term health complications, so it is essential that owners are aware of the foods their pet should not be eating. Strictly avoid providing any treats with added sugars or artificial sweeteners as well as onions, raisins, macadamia nuts, and raw eggs as these can be toxic and potentially fatal for a Havaneses. Additionally, do not give your dog bones or cooked pizza crust as they can cause choking and can result in internal obstruction or perforation.
Before bringing your Havanese home, it's important to ensure that you have all the essentials ready to ensure a smooth transition! A quality food, appropriate chew toys, a collar/harness, and a suitable leash should always be the first items on your checklist. To make your pup feel safe and secure, you'll also want to pick up a bed, a crate, and some cozy blankets to keep them warm. Don't forget to stock up on treats to help with training; grooming supplies; and some interactive toys to keep them stimulated and entertained.
Havaneses are generally considered small dogs. They are a member of the Bichon family and typically weigh 7 to 13 pounds. Their coats are long and luxuriant and can come in shades of white, black, cream, gold, or various combinations of these colors. They are popular toy breed dogs that tend to be lively, intelligent, and affectionate. They are known for their high energy level and need regular exercise to stay healthy and fit. They are also known for their friendly personalities and constant enthusiasm for life and playing.
Depending on the age of your Havanese, you may be able to take him running. If he is still a puppy, the charting of his age in human years suggests that up to two-year-old pups should not be taken running for more than 10-15 minutes at a time. For mature Havanese (two years and older) running can be an excellent exercise form but the running session has to be planned carefully. If the Havanese has access to cooler areas for resting, he can be taken to longer running exercises.
Generally, Havaneses are social and friendly, so they typically get along fine with other pets, such as cats and dogs. In fact, they will even groom their canine and feline housemates. However, it is worth mentioning that Havaneses can can be territorial and may not play well with small rodents or other small animals. Therefore, it is important to monitor their interactions with other pets to ensure everyone is safe. All in all, Havaneses have the potential to get along with other pets in the same household, although some extra caution should be taken when introducing them.
Yes, Havaneses are very smart! This breed is known for being energetic and intelligent, making them easy to train and an ideal pet. While most breeds have a certain level of intelligence, Havaneses stand out among their peers for their sharp minds. They have a good memory for instructions and tasks, making them effective problem-solvers. Plus, they have an excellent sense of humor and can usually be trained to perform tricks. On top of all this, they are always eager to please their owners and make extraordinarily loyal, affectionate companions.
