Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small, playful and cheerful breed of dog from Cuba, the country of its origin. The breed is sometimes referred to as the Cuban Bichon and it is a descendant of the Tenerife, a type of lapdog found in the Canary Islands. Havanese are outgoing and friendly, and their ability to learn quickly and respond to commands has made them a favorite among those looking for an intelligent, trainable companion. With bright eyes and a cute face, they are excellent family dogs who can adapt to different environments.
The Havanese coat is quite unique. It is a long, silky, and wavy coat that is very soft to the touch and often requires minimal trimming or care. The coat is non-shedding and can range in color from white to cream to chocolate. An interesting and lesser known fact about the Havanese is they sometimes have a hypoallergenic coat, which make them an ideal choice for individuals with allergies.
Feeding Havaneses a balanced diet of high-quality commercial dog food and well-cooked, nutrient-rich foods is the best approach for optimal health. Avoid processed foods like chips, candy, and cakes that are high in sugar and deficient in important nutrients. Also, refrain from giving Havaneses table scraps as they are often very high in fat and can contribute to weight gain and nutritional imbalance. Some treats, such as bones and rawhide, can also be bad for their teeth and gums.
Getting ready for the arrival of your new Havanese should be a fun and exciting experience! Make sure you have the correct food, treats, bedding, and toys before your pup's arrival. It's also important to puppy-proof your home and create a safe environment with good chew toys, safe places to nap, and no edges or corners which could harm them. Establish a routine, like regular potty breaks and meals, as well as a suitable training program.
Havaneses are generally considered small-medium sized dogs, however, they can sometimes be mistaken for larger breeds due to their unique appearance and characteristics. Standing at around 8-11 inches tall and weighing between 7-13 pounds, Havaneses are considered to be among the smallest of purebreds. Despite their size, they are noted for their long, fluffy coats, sturdy build, and overall alertness. Havaneses are known to be excellent companion animals, easily adapting to a variety of different living situations.
Generally, Havaneses do enjoy swimming as much as any other breed of dog. Being a smaller breed, Havaneses are sometimes thought to be less capable when it comes to water, however they can be quite content infrequently paddling in a pool or lake. To increase safety, if taking your Havanes out for a swim, always use a life vest or floatation device and take extra precautions to make sure your pup is not in danger.
Generally speaking, Havaneses are known to be excellent and friendly companions to other pets. However, as with any pet, the introduction process should be done slowly and with plenty of supervision. With proper socialization, Havaneses can get along quite nicely with other animals, such as cats and other small dogs. It is important to monitor your Havaneses during introductions, especially if they are not used to being around animals.
The exact amount of time necessary to train a Havanese varies depending on the age and personality of your pup. Generally speaking, a Havanese puppy should have an average of about thirty minutes of training per day. For an adult Havanese, a minimum of fifteen minutes of training each day is recommended. However, it's important to note that the more training the pup gets, the more successful they will be in mastering dog obedience skills. Make sure that each training session challenges your pup, but also keep it short enough that your pup doesn't get bored.
