Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small companion breed of dogs that belong to the Bichon group, originating from Cuba. It is a mix of the Bichon Tenerife, Poodle, and an unknown orientation of terrier and is often referred to as the “little dog who thinks he is a big dog”. The Havaneses is a gentle, loyal, and alert breed that is well suited to apartment living or suburban life due to its low-level of exercise needs.
Yes, Havaneses are generally considered hypoallergenic. This means they're a good choice for those who have allergies to other types of pets. Their hypoallergenic status is the result of their breed's low level of shedding. As these dogs have a thick, fluffy coat, much of the loose fur is trapped in the coat rather than being released into the air. Because of this, Havaneses are less likely than other breeds to cause an allergic reaction.
Feeding a Havaneses a high-quality, premium diet consisting of nutrient-rich food with limited treats and snacks is essential for their health and wellbeing. Therefore it is important to avoid feeding the Havaneses people food, especially items like chocolate, grapes, raisins, and anything containing xylitol as these can be toxic. Aim to offer Havaneses smaller portions of a commercially prepared diet with added fresh lean meat and vegetables, as they do not have the same ability as larger breeds to metabolize excess fat and calories gained from a high-fat diet.
Before getting a Havanese, it is important to purchase basic supplies such as a high-quality food, a flat collar, a six-foot leash, treats, a pet brush or comb, a carrier or crate, and some toys. You should also have a bed and a water bowl; it's a good idea to have a vitamin supplement and a flea and tick prevention product on hand as well. A grooming table and clippers are extremely helpful (and not just for Havanese they can come in handy for other pets too).
While Havaneses might not be considered large breeds, they do average around 7-10 pounds and can reach heights of 9-13 inches. They are considered sturdy little dogs with a sturdy frame that is considered larger than its size and can become good family pets with the proper training. While they are usually placid, well-mannered, and loving, they are also alert and sociable dogs that are known to be good watchdogs. They have an intelligent and playful nature, which makes them great companions for both adults and children.
Every dog is different, but in general it is recommended to walk a Havanese breed at least 30 minutes each day. This can be broken up into two 15-minute walks or a single longer walk, but ensure you provide your pet with ample exercise both indoors and outdoors. Taking a combination of short walks, playing fetch or tug-of-war in the backyard, and engaging in mentally stimulating activities such as puzzle games can provide your pup with the best balanced lifestyle. The more mental and physical stimulation you provide, the more content and healthy your Havanese will be.
Absolutely! Havaneses make wonderful first-time pets. They are very friendly and affectionate, making them excellent companions. They are intelligent and trainable for basic obedience commands, and their size also makes them a convenient size to fit into an apartment or a smaller living area. Since they are prone to mischief, an owner should be vigilant in keeping the pup on a regular routine and making sure they are properly exercised. This breed is also highly adaptable, easy going, and loves to interact with children as long as the kids are taught from an early age how to properly handle their pet.
Training your Havanese requires patience and consistency. Start by establishing yourself as the leader; be firm and direct with your commands. Break down the training steps into simple tasks like walking on a leash, socializing, and basic obedience like “sit” and “stay”. For each task, provide positive reinforcement when your dog displays appropriate behavior—treats, a pat, or verbal praise can all help enhance good behavior. Stay consistent and keep your commands simple and avoid harsh words, tone, or punishment.
