Questions & Answers
Havaneses are small and delightful companions that are both easy to train and highly entertaining. One fun fact about these pups is that they are descended from the Bichon breed, which were bred to entertain both sailors and royal families. Also, the Havaneses is a very loyal breed, often called the Velcro dog since they like to stay near their owners. They are also known for their delightful personalities and they make excellent watchdogs since they always notice any strange behavior.
The Havanese breed is characterized by its silky, flowing, wavy coat. The color of their fur varies from white, gold, silver, blue, cream, black, or a combination. The long coat can measure anywhere from 7 to 12 inches and does not require a lot of professional grooming. The top coat of the Havanese is soft and can be likened to strands of frozen silk if a groomer does a good job. As puppies, they require regular brushing, and as they mature, an occasional brushing is required to keep their coats healthy and tangle-free.
Havaneses are small dogs, so their diet is just as small. The best form of nutrition for a Havaneses is a diet that is high in protein and fat, consisting of human-grade, high-quality meals. A balanced diet of meat, vegetables and grains is the optimal option. For treats, protein snacks such as cheese or deli meats are good choices. Raw or lightly steamed vegetables should be fed to Havaneses as well. To supplement their diet, Havaneses should also be given vitamins and minerals specifically formulated for small breeds.
Before deciding to purchase a Havanese, it is important to make sure you have all the essential items necessary to care for your new pet. Some must-have items include a leash and collar, food and water bowls, a comfortable bed, chew toys, and a brush/comb for grooming. You should also have a crate for housebreaking and to ensure your Havanese is safe when no one is home. Additionally, regular vet visits, treats, and supplies like nail clippers and dental hygiene products are also important to keep your pet healthy and happy.
Havanese puppies typically have an average size of 8 to 11 inches tall and 7 to 13 pounds when fully grown. However, size can vary greatly among this breed, depending on the pup's parentage and the nutrition and lifestyle they receive in the early stages of their development. The age at which the puppy reaches its full size also plays a role, with males typically reaching their full size a little later than females. In general, you can expect your Havanese puppy to be quite small, but as it grows and matures, its size cannot be accurately predicted without more information.
The amount of time you should walk your Havanese dog per day greatly depends on their age, health, and energy level. Generally, it's best for Havanese to get about 30 minutes of exercise a day, although it can be more or less depending on the individual recipient. If your Havanese is young and healthy, at least one good walk every day could suffice, but adding a few extra shorter walks throughout the day will benefit your dog by providing both mental and physical stimulation.
Havaneses are typically gentle and friendly around children, and do generally get along quite well with them. They are amusing and playful, often enjoying activities like chase and fetch. They are intelligent and trainable, and therefore they can learn to respond to commands and interact appropriately with children. Havaneses have also been known to be protective and loyal toward children, making them great companions for families with kids. They are social and enjoy being around people, and don't usually shy away from physical affection with children, often exhibiting signs of delight when interacting with them.
Havaneses can be quite intelligent dogs. They are highly intuitive and have an uncanny ability to pick up on cues from their owners and environment, as well as being quite eager to please. They have been known to learn commands fairly quickly and retain the information for a long period of time. Their agility and athleticism, combined with their intelligence also make them great problem-solvers. They are good at adapting to new circumstances and learn from mistakes. Additionally, Havaneses can be trained to do all sorts of tasks and tricks, including skilled ones like agility and tracking.
