Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a highly intelligent small breed of dog. They are also known as “Bichon”, and are part of the “Bichon Frise” family. They were first developed in Cuba near the city of Havana, hence the name. Havaneses are a very popular breed because of their pleasant nature and ability to be trained quickly. They make great companions due to their affectionate nature and love for social settings. Havaneses have an average life expectancy of 12-15 years, and compared to other breeds they are generally quite healthy.
The Havanese has a single-layered coat that is wavy, silky, and surprisingly long for such a small breed. It usually has an abundant amount of naturally occurring "tangles" around the face, neck, and ears areas. The coat comes in many colors such as white, cream, chocolate, silver, blue, and black. It has no undercoat so it does not shed much and is hypoallergenic. Grooming should be done once per week to brush the hair and remove dirt, debris, and mats.
Depending on the age of your Havanese, there are different types of food that you can feed them. For puppies, an age-appropriate diet should be high in protein and fat so that they can quickly grow and develop properly. Adult Havanese need diets that are low in fat yet still nutritious and easily digestible; there are many specially made foods designed for small-breed adult dogs available on the market today. Make sure that you purchase a high quality food that is balanced and free from fillers such as corn, wheat, and soy. Feed twice daily and never overfeed;
Before getting a Havanese, it's important to consider the necessary items to ensure you both get off to a great start. Depending on your individual situation, you may need different necessities; however, some basic items to consider are a collar, leash, ID tag, food and water bowls, puppy wipes, a secure and safe crate, grooming supplies, several chew toys, a comfortable bed or pillow, an appropriate puppy food, treats, and a brush.
Havaneses come in small, medium, and large sizes. However, the exact size ranges may vary by individual breeder, given the genetic diversity of the breed. It's important to note that the size of a Havaneses is not solely determined by its breed, but can be greatly affected by additional factors such as diet, exercise, and environment. To ensure you are getting the best size Havaneses for your lifestyle, it's important to research and compare breeders before making your purchase.
Walking your Havanese should be a daily priority; however, the number of minutes each day should depend on their age and activity level. Generally, it is recommended that Havanese puppies, under 16 weeks old, get about 10-15 minutes of exercise each day. As they get older, they should be able to handle 30 minutes per day of walking, perhaps broken up into smaller sessions. For adult dogs, a minimum of 45 minutes to an hour per day is ideal. That should provide enough time for a brisk walk in their neighbourhood or at a local dog park.
Havaneses can make lovely and devoted companions for first-time owners. As a breed, Havaneses are generally enthusiastic, loving, and fun-loving dogs with loyal and affectionate temperaments. They are intelligent and easily trainable and typically don't take up a lot of room in your home. They require regular grooming so it's important to factor in the additional expense of taking them to the groomer. It is suggested that first-time owners be sure to thoroughly research the Havaneses breed to make sure they are a good fit for their lifestyle.
Training your Havanese dog should begin with familiarizing them with the various elements of obedience. Training sessions should be fun, short, positive, and frequent. Start off with teaching basic commands such as 'sit', 'down', 'stay', and 'come' with positive reinforcement (rewards such as treats). After your pup has mastered the commands, he/she may move onto more difficult tasks such as performing simple tricks. During these lessons, encourage your pup and reward them for a job well done.
