Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a wonderful breed of toy dog. They are intelligent, social and full of personality. They usually don't exceed 7-9 pounds in weight and stand 13-15 inches tall. They have a soft and silky coat that comes in many shades, such as black and tan, brown, white, cream, and more. Havaneses require some daily grooming and regular trips to the groomer to keep their coats looking healthy and shiny.
It is possible that you could experience an allergic reaction to a Havaneses, just like any other pet. Allergies are an individual matter, and some individuals can be allergic to any animal that has fur. That being said, it is also possible that certain individuals may not experience any allergic reactions despite this breed. The best way to know for sure would be to visit a doctor or allergist to get tested.
Havaneses typically eat a variety of proteins found in sources like chicken, beef, and fish. They also enjoy vegetables such as potatoes and carrots, and fruits like apples and oranges. Nutritionally, grains like oats, wheat, and millet are also important. It’s not uncommon for Havaneses to add rice to meals for a source of carbohydrates as well. For snacks, Havaneses may choose to eat a little cheese, some nuts, and/or dried fruit. In addition, they have a penchant for fresh eggs, especially as part of a breakfast.
To prepare your home for your new Havanese, make sure that your home is safe and properly equipment. Start by blocking access to areas that may be dangerous and block entry points to any area that may contain hazardous materials. For example, try using baby gates at the top and bottom of stairwells and remove items such as blind cords and outlets that your pet can access. It might be helpful to invest in a crate that is placed in an area of your home where your Havanese can feel comfortable and secure.
Although Havaneses seem like large dogs, they are actually considered to be small or toy-sized dogs. They have a tall standing height which can appear deceptively bigger than their actual size. Havaneses are ready companions for those who want a dog who is loyal and playful. They enjoy participating in activities and spending time with their owners. Due to their size, they are good dogs for those who live in smaller spaces, although they do require proper daily exercise.
Absolutely! Taking your Havanese running can be a great activity to keep them both healthy and entertained. When starting out, it's important to only take your Havanese running for short periods of time and build up gradually as they become used to it. You can begin by taking walks with your Havanese and gradually increase the intensity of the walks. When you feel that your Havanese is physically prepared to endure longer running periods, you can start taking them running with you.
Havaneses are great companions for first-time owners. They have an independent spirit that makes them easy to train and they're very socially adept. With a moderate energy level, Havaneses don't need an excessive amount of exercise, making them good for those with limited time to commit. They also typically have short coats which requires minimal grooming and a cheerful disposition which makes them an ideal pet. On top of all that, Havaneses are charming, small, and smart which makes them both comforting and entertaining to be around.
Training a Havanese can be a rewarding experience! First and foremost, it is important to establish a consistent routine of positive reinforcement that involves frequent praise and rewards. Stick to specific commands and maintain a consistent reward system. Havanese are a very intelligent breed and respond well to consistent training.
