Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small, lovable breed of dog with an outgoing, friendly personality. They have a unique, curly, hypoallergenic coat and are considered to be one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world. A Havaneses is an excellent companion pet, as they are extremely enthusiastic and have a deep need to please their owners. They are also very protective and loyal and need regular socialization. These dogs require moderate daily exercise, including a daily walk and plenty of playtime.
The Havanese breed has a long, soft, silky coat with a moderate amount of wave or curl that comes in many stunning colors. They have an impressive full mane and stand-off coat which gives them an amazing silhouette. It is very low-shedding or non-shedding and fairly easy to maintain. Grooming habits should include regular brushing and combing to maintain the coat's neat appearance and remove any tangles or matting, occasional baths to clean the coat, and tidying of the eyes and ears.
Havaneses typically eat a variety of proteins, grains, and vegetables. They often enjoy lean meats such as skinless, white-meat chicken; lean cuts of beef or pork; or turkey. Healthy grains and carbohydrates such as oatmeal, millet, barley, and frozen or canned vegetables also make up a diet for Havaneses. They greatly enjoy fresh fruits, like oranges, apples, and mangos, as well as nuts like almonds and walnuts.
To ensure that your home is prepared for your new Havanese companion, the first step is to ensure that the home is safe. This might include organizing and securing loose objects, hiding power chords and cables, proofing against possible escape routes, and pet-proofing the home to ensure that your pup cannot access any areas of the home that may pose a safety hazard. Additionally, it is important to consider where in the home the pup will be spending the majority of its time and to prepare that space accordingly. Make sure that the space is warm, dry, and inviting.
The Havaneses is a breed of small diameter dogs that typically stands 8-11 inches tall at the shoulder. The Havaneses typically weighs between 7-13 pounds full grown, although some may reach up to 18 pounds, depending on the individual pup. While these dogs are considered small, they are known as "big dogs in small packages" due to their huge personalities and comical behavior. They are lively, intelligent and sociable dogs, and are full of fun.
Yes, Havaneses are active dogs. Though they are slightly smaller in size than most larger breeds, their high energy levels and enthusiasm can make them a joy to be around. Unlike larger breeds, Havaneses are also fairly adaptable, which makes it easy to take them on regular walks, hikes, or even to a dog park. Their coat also does not require a large amount of grooming, meaning you can find quality time outdoors with your pup without fear of too much shedding or maintenance.
Generally, Havaneses do get along with other pets. In addition to loving humans, they are often very affectionate and social creatures. When interacting with other animals, dogs of this breed tend to have a silly, almost joking demeanor that can actually endear them to other animals and make them easy to get along with. Like all animals, however, Havaneses may have their own idiosyncrasies so it's important to remember that it's best to introduce them gradually and ensure that all animals are supervised when spending time together.
Training your Havanese is relatively easy, but it requires consistent dedication and a good understanding of positive reinforcement methods. When training, always start with simple commands and commands to which they can reliably respond. Short training sessions daily are most effective, and the successes should be rewarded with words of encouragement and treats. Be patient when your pet does not respond as expected and never yell or punish your pet. Instead, demonstrate the desired behavior and reward when they perform correctly.
