Questions & Answers
The most interesting thing about Havaneses is that they are believed to be a combination of breeds such as the Bichon, Cage Hound, and Poodle. This unique combination results in a very special breed which is eager to please, intelligent, and a people-oriented companion. Plus, their spunky yet gentle nature makes them great playmates for adults and children alike. As one of the oldest breeds in Cuba, Havaneses were popularized by Cuban aristocrats and named after their capital city of Havana.
Havaneses can be considered hypoallergenic as they do not shed much, if any fur. This means that there is less dander and dead hair for a person with pet allergies to be exposed to. However, a Havaneses should not be considered completely hypoallergenic as they still have the ability to produce an allergic reaction in exceptionally sensitive people. Typically, those with allergies should visit an allergist to get an allergy test done before considering adding a Havaneses to the family.
When caring for a Havanese, choosing a high-quality food is key. You should pick a diet that is specifically designed for toy breeds like the Havanese, as these breeds have specific nutritional needs that differ from other dog breeds. The diet should contain plenty of healthy sources of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that are appropriate for the Havanese's size and activity level, as well as essential vitamins and minerals that support overall health. If you're unsure of what food you should provide, your vet can likely suggest a brand that provides optimal nutrition. Additionally, portion size is important.
Havanese are beloved companion dogs that generally require minimal special care, however, like most breeds, they do have certain requirements. Primarily, Havanese require daily exercise, such as playing, walking, and running to keep them both mentally and physically active. Additionally, it is important to keep their coats properly groomed, which will require both regular brushing and occasional trims. As with any breed, socialization is critical for a well-rounded and sociable Havanese, as early exposure to other people and animals can vastly improve their quality of life.
Havaneses are considered small dogs due to their low height that generally measures 8-11 inches (20-28 cm). Even though their height is considered small, Havaneses are known for their robust and muscular body, that can make them appear larger. Typically, their bodyweight falls in the 6-13 pound (2.7-5.9 kg) range, which is considered to be within the medium to small range for a dog.
Every dog is unique and will require a different amount of exercise depending on their age, size, and overall health. Generally speaking, a Havanese should receive approximately 30-45 minutes of exercise per day. This can involve a long walk, vigorous playtime, or a scheduled visit to the dog park. Shorter walks can be broken up into multiple walks throughout the day, allowing them to stay active and engaged. Whether indoors or outdoors, always make sure your Havanese has the opportunity to run, stretch their legs, and have fun!
Absolutely! Havaneses are known for their playful and friendly disposition, making them an excellent choice for families with children. They're a very intelligent breed and are eager to please--both of these qualities make them trainable and easy to love. Havaneses have a patient, gentle, and loyal nature that make them wonderful companion animals for children. As with all breeds, socialization and training are key to ensure that the puppy grows up to be a well-behaved pet. Furthermore, Havaneses love attention, making them the perfect pup for families who can provide plenty of affection.
The amount of training a Havaneses requires each day depends on numerous factors, such as age, activity level, health, and environment. Generally, however, most Havaneses will benefit from 15-20 minutes of meaningful training activities per day. This could include short play sessions, basic obedience work, or puzzle-solving games. An enrichment program that promotes physical and mental well-being should also be included. During these activities, be sure to include rewards for good behaviors, lots of positive reinforcement, and regular mental stimulation.
