Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an intelligent, small breed of dog known for their friendly, playful attitudes. They are one of the most popular toy breeds, and are also known as the "Havanese Cuban Bichon", "Bichon Havaneses", or just the "Havanese". Their coats can range in length from long to short, but they all have a soft, wavy texture. They are relatively low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, only needing regular brushing and occasional professional clipping.
The coat of the Havanese is usually of a semi-long length with a slight wave or curl. This breed does not have an under coat and therefore the hair may lay close to the skin, however it does not completely lack texture. The colors range from white to black and cream to sable. The coat is often described as fine, silky and resilient. Additionally, the breed should have extra fullness around the neck and hindquarters which adds to the breed’s total look.
Havaneses typically eat a balanced diet that provides enough essential nutrients to maintain good health. They may eat a variety of foods like lean proteins, fruits, whole grains, vegetables, and dairy. It's recommended that they receive a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise a day for optimal health. Common proteins sources for Havaneses include chicken, ground beef, pork, eggs, and fish. When it comes to fruit and vegetables, Havaneses may eat bananas, apples, oranges, carrots, broccoli, and spinach.
Preparing for a new Havanese pup requires both physical and mental preparation. Begin by researching the breed, including common health issues and training techniques. Additionally, create a safe environment and decide where the pup will sleep, eat, and play. Assemble the basic supplies—food, bedding, toys, etc. It is also important to research veterinarians and decide whether pet insurance makes sense. When selecting food, consider the pup’s age, current health, and any allergies.
Havaneses come in a range of different sizes. Generally, the Havaneses weighed between 10 and 20lbs when fully grown, however, they have been known to range from 5 to 25lbs. The height for a typical Havaneses can range from 10-14 inches at the shoulder. Some individual dogs may be smaller or larger than average, and it is important to remember that some Havaneses may differ from the expected size range due to breeding differences.
Many Havaneses absolutely adore going for a swim! It is common to find this lovable breed of companion in the shallow end, or doggie paddling around with a few laps of their own. Considering their independent and stubborn nature, taking the plunge into the pool could be a bit intimidating for some Havaneses. On the other hand, the breed is naturally inquisitive and will undoubtedly be game for a dip provided their owner offers plenty of reassurance and enthusiasm. With a few swimming lessons, most Havaneses gain confidence and enjoy leisurely strokes in the pool.
Generally speaking, Havaneses tend to get along very well with children. In fact, they are typically known as a people-oriented breed that enjoys spending quality time with the family. They are also sociable animals that typically bond closely with their owners and tend to be very friendly with strangers. With the proper introduction period between a Havaneses and your kids, it's likely that they will become loving, life-long friends. Havanesese are known for their intelligence and ability to adapt, and can provide hours of entertainment and companionship.
The amount of time needed to train a Havanese each day will vary depending on the individual dog. Generally, it is recommended that owners dedicate at least 20 minutes per day to interactions that will help strengthen the bond they have with their pet, such as obedience training. A Havanese can also benefit from additional activities like training games or agility exercises, and you may need to allocate more time to these activities. Keep in mind that you should be flexible with your training sessions as some days may require more time and others less.
