Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a delightful, centuries-old toy breed that is part of the Bichon group of dogs. As their name suggests, they are native to Havana, Cuba and they possess many desirable traits like calmness, intelligence, and loyalty. They are often described as having a “teddy bear” appearance with a white, silky coat, dark eyes, and small ears that often stick up like two triangle peaks. Depending on their breed architecture, they usually weigh between seven and thirteen pounds, making them an ideal pet for those with limited space.
The Havanese breed has a beautiful, distinctive coat. It is a medium-length double-coated breed, with a soft, fine undercoat overlaid with a longer, slightly wavier outer coat. They come in a variety of colors, including cream, white, black, silver, gold, chocolate and sable. The coat should be kept long and should be brushed and groomed regularly to keep it healthy and tangle-free. Although it does not shed a great deal, they do require regular maintenance to keep their coats looking their best.
Havaneses love to eat a variety of different foods! Most Havaneses enjoy same type of food that is widely accepted in its place of origin, Cuba. This includes ripe fruits and vegetables, rice and beans, pork, fish, beef, eggs, and other sources of protein. A Cuban staple includes the root vegetable yuca, usually boiled and served with dishes such as ropa vieja, which is stewed beef with tomato-based sauce. In addition to Cuban food, many Havaneses are also fond of fresh seafood, cooked in the traditional Latin American style.
Havanese require dedicated and regular care in order to thrive. They need daily brushing and clipping to keep their coats clean and shiny, as well as regular trips to the groomer for an all-over tidy. Like all breeds, they appreciate plenty of regular exercise and mental stimulation, and play sessions will help to build muscle and maintain a good level of fitness. They should also be provided with a balanced, nutritious diet to ensure their ideal weight and overall good health.
Havaneses sizes range from 7-12 inches in height, and approximately 7-13 pounds in weight. They are considered a small breed but their personality often exceeds their size. Much like every other breed, physical characteristics may vary depending on the lineage. Generally, it's important to remember that a healthy, happy Havaneses will have proper diet and exercise with plenty of playtime, and although they may not get very large in size, they will always want to be a part of the family.
Havaneses are a loyal breed of small dogs and are known to possess a good temperament, making them a great choice for owners looking for an emotional connection. Exercise is important for them in order to keep both their physical and mental health in check. The amount of exercise that Havaneses need depends on multiple factors such as age, size, and energy level. Generally, Havaneses need at least 20 minutes of exercise a day divided into two or three play and walk sessions.
Generally, Havaneses do get along with kids quite well. They are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and playful nature which can make them great companions for children. With training, they can learn to understand basic commands and accompanying hand gestures, and can be reliable enough to follow basic safety rules while playing with children. When visiting Havaneses in homes, children should be taught how to properly and respectfully interact with the dog, such as allowing the dog to initiate contact before attempting to pet them, so as to create a comfortable experience for everyone involved.
Training a Havanese can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it is not necessarily easy. Training any dog requires commitment, consistency, and patience. Havanese are intelligent but playful, and often require a good amount of positive reinforcement. It is important to establish yourself as the leader early on, as failure to do so will make training more difficult. A successful training plan should include regular socialization and obedience classes or sessions with an experienced dog trainer. Keep in mind that Havanese puppies tend to require more patience during the training process as they learn.
