Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a breed of small dog native to Cuba and is often referred to as the "Cuban Bichon." It was originally used as a companion for Cuban aristocracy, but the beloved breed eventually made its way to other parts of the world such as the United States. The Havanese is a sturdy little dog that has an appearance that is similar to a terrier with long, floppy ears, a long, silky coat, and a distinguished beard. They are very intelligent and active, making them a great choice for families who are looking for an energetic and beloved pet.
Although all Havaneses have a luxurious, silky coat, the breed is considered to be a non-shedding breed. This means that the dead hair that a typical dog would shed remains in the coat and will need to be brushed out by hand. Generally, the coat does not need more than weekly brushing to remove loose fur, but because the coat is so luxurious, regular grooming is required for preventative maintenance. On average, a well-kept Havaneses will produce minimal fur, as they rarely shed more than a vague amount of hair.
Havaneses, like all small breeds of dog, should not be given treats or table scraps. It is important to consult your veterinarian to determine the best, nutritionally-balanced diet for your Havaneses. It is not recommended to feed a Havaneses large amount of starch or high-fat foods as this can cause obesity and digestive problems. Foods or snacks containing chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, and xylitol should also be avoided. Chewing bones can be dangerous for Havaneses and can lead to intestinal obstruction or constipation.
Before introducing your new Havanese into your home, it's important to ensure you are adequately prepared. First, stock up on necessary supplies such as a collar, leash, food, water bowls, and toys. Additionally, you may want to purchase grooming supplies like a brush, shampoo, and nail clippers. Secondly, familiarize yourself with the breed and their behaviors. Research the breed and ask questions. If possible, talk to an experienced Havanese owner about their experiences. Lastly, make sure you have set up the necessary safeguards in your home.
Havaneses, while relatively small dogs, have been considered 'big' for their size and can weigh up to 16-20lbs. Unlike other smaller breeds they maintain a strong sense of self-confidence and are often referred to as being a very courageous breed. Their stature is larger than other small breeds and they tend to be more outgoing and friendly. They make wonderful watchdogs, due to their alert personalities, and they can be alert and protective, though in true companion-dog fashion they are kind and gentle with their families and friends.
Havaneses, like any other breed of dog, need exercise to maintain good physical and mental health. Generally, Havaneses are medium-level energy dogs who need an appropriate amount of physical exercise on a daily basis. A good guideline is a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of an hour of moderate level physical activity per day. That could include a leisurely walk twice a day, a game of fetch, or swimming. Mental exercise such as playing interactive puzzles or fetching hidden items are also recommended to provide your Havaneses with cognitive activity.
Havaneses are great dogs for first-time owners, as they are smart, loyal, and very trainable. They are full of energy and life and thrive on the attention they get from their owners. With their small stature, they don't need as much exercise as some larger breeds, so they are great for people who may have limited time for a larger breed. In addition, they can be very entertaining and clown-like, and are content to play indoor games and cuddle.
Havaneses are definitely smart dogs; they have been known to be highly intelligent and trainable. Their characteristic intelligence and sharpness is what makes them great family pets. They excel in learning new commands quickly and are eager to please their owners. Because of Havaneses' intelligence, they make them great for tricks, agility classes and most importantly as a loving companion. They are so eager to learn new things, likely this is due to their good memory. They can recognize and remember their owners, as well as responding to different commands like “sit” or “stay”.
