Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a breed of toy dog, more commonly known as the "Havanese Bichon". They are considered to be amongst the most intelligent of dog breeds, with their roots in Cuba, and have been known for centuries for their loyal personalities and ability to form strong, loving bonds with their owners. Characteristically, they have long, thick coats of hair that are usually wavy or curly, and are typically white, but may also have a combination of different colors such as black, silver, brown and cream.
The coats of Havanese dogs vary greatly due to their unique mix of Maltese, Bichon Frise and sometimes Poodle and/or Cairn Terrier. Generally, they have a thick, double-coated, wavy or curled coat which is soft to the touch. The coat is long and can range from 1-3 inches in length, however, many owners prefer to keep their Havanese in a cute, fluffy teddy bear cut. The coat requires a bit of maintenance, as frequent brushing is necessary in order to avoid large mats.
Havaneses should not be fed, among other things, dairy, candy, chocolate, raisins, and grapes. These things, and even certain foods that are safe for humans, can wreak havoc on a Havaneses' digestive system, including causing vomiting, diarrhea, and other illnesses. High-fat foods, such as avocado, raw foods, raw bones, and onions should be avoided, as they can lead to excessive weight gain, pancreatitis, and food allergies.
The best way to become a great puppy parent for your Havanese is to learn as much as possible about the breed and how to care for them. Research nutrition requirements, exercise needs, behavioral traits and tendencies, medical issues, and grooming needs. Socialize your puppy to people and other animals by taking him to puppy classes or other organized activities. Invest in housetraining him so that he learns the house rules. Spend time daily providing him with affection, exercise, and stimulation. Take him on walks, train him to learn commands, and when necessary, provide gentle corrections to reinforce desired behaviors.
Yes, Havaneses are considered small dogs. Their adult size typically reaches around 8 to 12 lbs and stands between 9 and 12 inches in height at the shoulder, making them one of the smallest breeds of companion dogs. They are considered to be a toy breed, thanks to their small, compact size and adorable personality. The Havaneses' long, silky coat requires regular grooming and trimming to look its best, and they are known for being bright, friendly, and loyal little dogs. They also enjoy a lot of activity and playtime, despite their small size.
Havaneses need regular physical activity to stay healthy and maintain a healthy body weight. An adult Havaneses should get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day to help maintain muscle tone, build strong bones, control weight, and keep their blood sugar and cholesterol levels in a healthy range. Puppies and younger Havaneses will benefit from two moderate-intensity exercise sessions spread throughout the day. Older Havaneses should have at least one moderate-intensity exercise session per day.
Yes, Havaneses generally get along well with kids. They are highly intelligent, affectionate, and devoted, making them an ideal companion for children. They have an engaging personality and are known for being patient and gentle, which makes them a perfect pal for younger family members. A Havaneses can thrive in family settings and, if properly socialized, will happily engage with children of all ages. However, when it comes to children, it's important to always supervise playtime and make sure all parties are exhibiting responsible behaviour.
Training a Havanese may be hard or easy depending on the individual dog and the knowledge and experience of the trainer. Like any breed, regular training and positive reinforcement will help teach basic commands and desired behaviors while also strengthening the bond between the dog and their owner. Additionally, Havanese are known for being intelligent and eager to please so training frequently and consistently can be rewarding. That being said, it is important that the trainer takes into account the Havanese's sensitive nature when setting up any training plan, as they may be prone to feelings of anxiety and fear.
