Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small, toy breed that belongs to the Bichon family, which includes Bichon Frise, Bolognese, Maltese, Havanese, Coton de Tulear and other similar breeds. These dogs are known for their intelligence, gentle personality, cute look and ability to be easily trainable. Despite their small size, they are capable of providing and demanding a great deal of attention and love from their families. Additionally, their coat is soft and silky which makes them great cuddle companions.
No, Havaneses will not generally cause an allergic reaction; however, like any pet, individuals may be predisposed to experiencing allergies from all types of dander or fur. It's possible to develop an allergy to any pet, no matter the breed. If you are concerned, it's best to consult with an allergist to assess your risk. While no breed is totally allergen-free, Havaneses have a non-shedding coat, which is known to carry fewer allergens than those breeds that shed more frequently.
Havaneses may enjoy a variety of different foods, depending on the individual. Generally speaking, they can eat all the same food that a typical dog might enjoy, such as high-quality brands of puppy food or kibble. However, it's a good idea to supplement their meals with wet food, cooked proteins such as boiled chicken or fish, vegetables, fresh fruits and, occasionally, some plain yogurt, oatmeal or cottage cheese. Treats are also recommended as rewards for positive reinforcement and training, but they should always be given in moderation.
Before getting yourself a Havanese, you should consider buying several essential items. A snug, well-designed dog crate with food and water bowls is essential for providing a safe and secure space for them. You'll also want to invest in a collar and leash, and look into getting a Havanese specific shampoo and conditioner if they have certain skin sensitivities. Toys are also important for maintaining your dog's mental well being. Lastly, be sure to pick up a quality dog food formula that is specifically designed for the needs of a Havanese.
Havanese dogs can range in size from toy to medium breeds, generally ranging in weight from 7 to 13 pounds. Toy Havaneses typically stand up to 9 inches at the shoulder, although sizes can vary even in the same litter. Medium Havaneses can stand up to 11 inches tall and usually weigh between 9 and 13 pounds. No matter the size, they have the same playful, outgoing personality often characterized by their large eyes and bright expressions.
A Havanese is an active, cheerful, and intelligent little companion, and it is important to give it regular exercise. Walking your Havanese for at least 15-20 minutes a day provides mental stimulation, as well as physical health. Regular, daily walks provide an opportunity to socialize and explore new environments, which can help to reduce boredom and lessen a dog's temperament issues. Additionally, it helps to maintain their muscle mass; and provides an opportunity for potty training. All of which will help keep your Havanese happy and healthy.
Havaneses are exceptionally social and affectionate dogs, making them wonderful companions for families of all sizes. They have the energy and playfulness of a toy breed, yet are intelligent enough to recognize commands and understand complex instructions. Havaneses are known for being exceptionally gentle and congenial with children and non-threatening to strangers. This makes them an ideal choice for families with young children, as they can provide comfort and compaionship without posing a threat. Havaneses also tend to be quite adaptable, getting quickly acquainted with the family's daily schedule and surroundings.
Training a Havanese is possible with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Begin socializing your pup as soon as you bring him home by introducing him to different places and people. Then, start teaching basic obedience commands like 'sit' and 'stay'. Use treats and praise to reward your pup for a job well done and avoid any use of physical reprimands. Implement a consistent daily schedule with set mealtimes and potty breaks. As your pup gets into the routine, begin gradually increasing his exercise level with interactive activities like fetch or frisbee.
