Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a breed of small dog that originated in Cuba. It is known for its friendly disposition and cheerful outlook. The breed can weigh up to 12 pounds and its average life expectancy is 14 to 16 years. With its thick, long, silky coat, the Havanese is a smart, playful, and loyal companion for any family. Their ears hang naturally and their tails curl over the back, earning them the nickname "Velcro Dogs" due to their desire to stay close.
The Havanese has a soft, flowing coat that is usually wavy or curly. It is a single layer coat that doesn't require trimming and can be either straight or wavy. The coat can range from warm cream to chocolate brown and has a generous amount of feathering at the chest, legs, face, and tail. It can grow to an average of 8-10 inches in length and looks particularly beautiful when cared for properly with a daily brushing. The breed sheds very little so regular grooming is important to keep the coat looking its best.
Feeding your Havanese a nutritious diet is the key to keeping them healthy and happy. Look for a food that is specifically formulated for small breed dogs, is free from artificial additives and preservatives, and contains high-quality proteins and balanced levels of carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins. Divide the total daily amount of food into two or three separate meals throughout the day and stick to a schedule. As they age, consider reducing the amount of energy-dense food as well as their food intake to prevent obesity and related health problems.
Before getting a Havanese, it is essential to purchase some items to ensure your pup will be well cared for. Appropriate food and supplies such as bowls and a crate are among the basic necessities. Regularly cleaning supplies such as grooming tools, a shampoo, and special shampoos for flea or tick prevention should be bought. It is also important to get plenty of treats, toys, and interactive play equipment to keep your pup entertained and encourage good behavior. More specific items your Havanese may need are ID tags, a harness and leash, and dog wipes for after walks.
Havaneses are a small breed of dog, often classified alongside toy breeds. On average, the weight of a Havaneses usually falls into the range of 6-13 pounds, making them significantly smaller than many large-breed dogs. While a Havaneses may appear larger than they actually are due to their long coats and fluffy plumed tail, they are usually considered to be a small to medium-sized breed. They have a cheerful, playful, and loving personality that many pet owners find endearing, but their size leaves them better suited for apartment living than an active family dog.
Havaneses need significant exercise to stay healthy and happy. On average, at least an hour of exercise a day should be provided with two or three shorter walks also recommended. Exercise should be spread out throughout the day and should include activities that promote both mental and physical stimulation such as playtime, walking, and obedience practice. Depending on the age of the Havaneses, they may require more or less exercise; however, all types of physical activity should be provided to keep their muscle tone and weight under control.
Havaneses can be an excellent and beloved addition to any family home. These dogs have a natural affinity for being part of a family unit. They are friendly, loyal, and social, and will often form strong bonds with children as well as adults. Their small size also makes them a great fit for cramped urban dwellings. The Havaneses' gentle temperament leads to few problems with aggression and makes them a great choice for family pets. They can occasionally be a bit mischievous, but they are generally loving and affectionate with their families.
The amount of time required to train a Havanese varies depending on the particular dog and its training needs. Generally speaking, however, a Havanese needs at least 20 minutes per day of focused training. This should be divided into two 10 minute sessions and should ideally involve both as positive reinforcement and rewarding good behaviour. Additionally, it is important to remember that these short training sessions should be enjoyable and serve as positive interactions for both owner and dog. The more consistent and enjoyable training sessions you have with your Havanese, the more successful you will be in establishing training goals.
