Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a toy breed of dog belonging to a distinct class of dogs known as the Bichon group. This breed has a unique soft, silky white coat and a curly tail, and is known for its outgoing, friendly personality. While their size may be small, these pups have a sturdy, well-balanced conformation. They are most often described as intelligent and alert, and historically have been employed as watchdogs and/or companion animals.
The Havanese coat is silky, soft and fluffy with no undercoat. Its hair does not shed but does require regular grooming to maintain its natural luster. Generally, the hair hangs straight down or waves gently and comes in many colors, including white, cream, gold, red, black and a combination of these colors. The hair can reach a length of 8-10 inches or be cut shorter for a simpler look. The long, full tail is carried over the back and stands up when alert.
Havanese dogs are a unique breed, likely to require a unique diet. As with any other breed, looking for a diet specifically formulated for a Havanese is likely to be the best way to provide all of the essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals necessary to ensure your pup's long-term health. High-quality brands, such as those with the American Feed Control Officials (AFFCO) approved label, are the best bet. Look for real meats, vegetables, and fruits as the primary ingredients, with limited fillers such as grains and corn.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Havanese involves providing plenty of love, patience, and attention. It starts with proper diet and nutrition; feed your pup with high-quality food tailored to their age and activity level. Exercise should also be a priority for your pup; regular walks or playtime helps to keep them healthy and active. Training is important to maintain your pup’s manners and behaviors, and socializing them so they can get along with other people and animals.
Havaneses are generally considered small to medium-sized dogs, with the average as a breed standing between 18 and 22 pounds. They have long, flowing coats that give the impression of being larger than they are, and while they can be bouncy and lively, they do not typically take up a lot of space. As such, they are not usually considered to be large dogs. However, they can certainly make a great companion for those who wish to share their home with a pup without having a huge pup taking up a lot of space.
You may be able to take your Havanese running, depending on the age and physical condition of your pup. A young, energetic dog may be able to handle short runs, while an older dog may need to take it a bit slower. Ideally, you should consult with your veterinarian before taking your Havanese running just to be sure. Depending on the breed and individual dog's physiology, running could be beneficial or could have a detrimental effect. At a minimum, you should take a slow and steady approach with intermittent rests and should look out for any signs of over-exertion.
Havaneses make excellent family dogs, as they are incredibly loving and loyal. Their intelligence, spunky personalities, and adorable looks make them a great choice for families with kids. Not only are they affectionate with their owners and friendly towards strangers, but they are also great with other pets and children. They are active, however they also do not require a lot of exercise and their curly coat means minimal shedding, so they do not require a great deal of grooming. Their small size makes them great for apartments, and their intentional size also makes them easily portable for vacations or trips.
The amount of time required to train a Havanese each day will depend on both the dog's age, level of training, and the individual goals of the owner. Generally speaking, an adult Havanese between the ages of one year and seven years should receive at least 30 minutes of structured, positive training every day. Puppies often require shorter training sessions of 10-15 minutes, multiple times per day. Care should be taken to ensure that the sessions are kept interesting and engaging for the pup.
