Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a unique class of toy dog breed in the Bichon family. Recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) since 1922, Havaneses are beloved for their cheerful expressions, loyal companionship, intelligence, an easy-to-groom coat, and even temperament. This breed's signature combination of hypoallergenic fur and cheerful personality makes them beloved pets for all types of owners – single people, young families, seniors, and those with pet allergies and sensitivity.
While it is possible to be allergic to any breed of dog, Havaneses are generally considered to be hypoallergenic due to their nearly non-shedding coats. Having a non-shedding fur minimizes the amount of allergens that can be found within the home, leading to lower incidents of allergic reactions. However, it's important to note that all breeds produce some amount of dander, and even the best hypoallergenic breeds can still cause allergic reactions.
Havaneses are a type of small, companion dog that are often referred to as "little clowns". They require a special diet that provides a balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat to ensure their long-term good health. Generally, Havaneses eat a combination of kibble and/or fresh cooked food. Their diet should include unprocessed meats and whole grains such as brown rice, oats, quinoa, and cooked vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, celery, and broccoli.
Prior to bringing your new Havanese home, there are several steps to take to ensure your home is prepared. Cleaning areas where your dog will have access to, such as furniture, rugs, and bedding, is essential. Be sure to get pet friendly cleaning products when appropriate. Additionally, purchase necessary items such as a dog bed, toys, food bowls, and other accessories suitable for your breed.
A Havanese puppy may be expected to reach a full size of 8-11 inches in height and weigh in around 7-13 pounds once fully grown. The exact size your puppy will grow to depend on a few factors, including diet, exercise regime, and even genetics. At around 4-5 months old, your pup should start settling into their full size range as their growth is completed, but all dogs grow and mature on different timelines. All puppies, regardless of size, should get proper exercise, nutrition, and vet visits to ensure healthy growth and development.
The amount of time you should walk your Havanese per day heavily depends on their age and health. Generally, an adult Havanese should get roughly thirty minutes of activity per day, while younger or older dogs may require more or less depending on their exact needs. You should also keep in mind that activity should be more than just walking – try to incorporate playtime and other activities into your time with your dog as well. Talk to your veterinarian about the exact needs of your Havanese and create a physical activity plan tailored to their specific health and age.
Havaneses can be great pets for first-time owners. They are small, easily trainable and can get along with people of all different backgrounds. Their socialization needs and personality traits help them to fit in with different living arrangements, providing a great companion for new owners. Additionally, Havaneses tend to adapt well to routines and learn quickly, having a single owner or family can make them feel content and secure in their new environment with little trouble.
The amount of time a person needs to train their Havaneses per day depends on a few factors, such as the age, health and temperament of the dog and the type of training that the owner is hoping to accomplish. Generally speaking, Havaneses require at least 30 minutes of active training time per day, plus 10-15 minutes for agility and reward-based training. Depending on the level of engagement with the process and the goals that you are hoping to achieve, you may need additional time.
