Questions & Answers
Havaneses are classified as a toy breed of dog. They are small in size, weighing just seven to 13 pounds on average. They have a distinctive look with their round heads, perked ears, and silky white coats. Due to their small stature, they do not require a lot of exercise. Instead, they are content to curl up on the couch or your lap. In addition to their endearing appearance, they are also intelligent and sociable, making them great family pets.
Havaneses are known to be non-shedding breeds, but that doesn't mean they are hypoallergenic. Although they don't shed their fur, they can still cause allergies as they still produce dander. While they don't have a thick, woolly coat like some other non-shedding breeds, Havaneses are known to shed a small amout of hair. They are, however, relatively low maintenance when it comes to grooming compared to other dogs breeds, as they only really need a weekly brush and the occasional bath.
It is not recommended to feed a Havaneses human food, as some items may be unsafe due to their small size and sensitive stomach. Refrain from providing them table scraps, as this can lead to an imbalance in their digestive tract and cause excessive flatulence. Avoid any foods high in sodium, fat, or sugar, as these can be harmful to a Havaneses' health and lead to obesity. Furthermore, do not feed a Havaneses raw or undercooked meat or fish, as this can lead to food poisoning.
Planning ahead is the key to being well prepared for your new Havanese. Research is the first step: find out about your Havanese’s individual needs and any health or behavior issues to look out for. Familiarize yourself with the breed, and make sure you have the right supplies and resources set up. Gathering the basic equipment that you will need for your pup, such as a kennel, food, toys, treats, grooming supplies, and other items, will help get you off to a good start.
Havanese dogs typically reach a height of 8 to 11.5 inches and a weight of 7 to 13 pounds once they are fully grown. Havanese puppies grow quickly during their first five months, but then the growth rate slows down a bit. Depending on the dog's gender, diet, and environment, they can continue to grow until they are anywhere between nine and 12 months old. They have a relatively long life span of 14-16 years. The Havanese breed's spunky personality and active spirit makes them a beloved pet and companion close to home and in public.
Many Havaneses love to swim, as it is a great source of exercise that is enjoyed by thousands of individuals all over the world. After all, it is a wonderful feeling to feel the water in its natural environment and get a good workout in the process. Whether they are swimming for leisure or they are using it as a form of exercise, Havaneses can often be found taking a dip in the pool or even at the beach. There are various swimming groups that organize contests in this breed of canine, and it is not uncommon to see Havaneses participating in them.
Generally, yes, Havaneses get along with kids! The breed is known for loving interaction with family and children. If you have a Havaneses, you can expect your pup to be super sweet and patient with your kids since they are known for being very gentle and loving. With that being said, it's still important to socialize every Havaneses early and often to ensure a strong bond between dog and child. The recommended training minutes per day for Havaneses is based on the individual needs of the pup. Most experts agree that a puppy of this breed should get at least an hour of exercise divided up into smaller intervals throughout the day. However, it's important to consider the pup's energy level and always follow the lead of the owner when it comes to how much training should be given. If needed, a pup can start with something closer to 30 minutes a day and gradually build up to the recommended hour of physical activity.
