Questions & Answers
Havaneses are small, companion-type dogs and are classified as a toy breed. They are very intelligent, friendly and loyal animals and usually make wonderful family pets. Their coat is long and curly, resembling a poodle's, and commonly comes in a variety of colors. Havaneses are believed to have originated in Havana, Cuba and are believed to be a descendant of the bichon family. They are strong, sturdy dogs and are surprisingly known to be very good guards despite their diminutive size.
The Havanese coat is one of a kind. It is soft and wavy, made from medium-length fur and can come in a lot of colors, from white to black and all the colors in between. It doesn't shed much, so it's easy to manage, but it still needs regular grooming to keep it looking beautiful and neat. Additionally, because of the dense fur, the coat can keep the Havanese dog protected in any weather condition it may find itself in. All in all, the Havanese coat truly stands out and is a marvel to behold!
Havaneses love to eat a variety of nutritious and delicious meals. Their diet typically consists of fruits, vegetables, grains, and meat. For starters, Havaneses often enjoy dishes such as yucca con mojo (boiled yucca) and plantain soup. For the main course, they tend to enjoy meats like pork and beef, served with options like white rice, black beans, and root vegetables like malanga (taro root). As a side dish, they usually feast upon sweet potatoes or green plantains.
Before getting a Havanese, you should purchase food and water dishes, a leash, a collar with an ID tag, a bed, toys, and grooming supplies such as a brush, a nail clipper, and a toothbrush. You will also need to buy some basic necessities like food, treats, waste bags, and puppy pads. Additionally, it might be helpful to get a crate or pen to use for house training and when you need to leave your pup alone. Lastly, pick up a few chew toys and puzzle toys to keep your pup entertained and happy.
Havaneses are considered small-medium sized dogs. According to the American Kennel Club, their size is listed as 8.25 11.5 inches at the shoulder for the height and 7 13 pounds for the weight when fully grown. As a result, they aren’t generally considered big dogs, but instead of being an extremely small breed they’re classified as a toy and companion breed. Their temperament is loyal, gentle, and intelligent, giving them an overall excellent nature for families with children and other animals.
Variety is key when it comes to the exercise needs of Havaneses. As a breed they are playful and active, so it is important to ensure they get sufficient exercise each day. A few minutes playing outdoors and a couple short walks per day should be enough to keep your Havaneses healthy and happy. Additionally, regular play sessions with toys and/or interactive games can help keep the Havaneses mentally stimulated. It is important to remember that while exercise is important, too much or intense exercise that overexerts the Havaneses could cause further physical problems throughout their life.
Havaneses are popularly known to be excellent around children. They have a very good-natured and patient demeanor which makes them an ideal family companion. They also have an unwavering loyalty to their human companions, making them a great choice for families with kids. Additionally, Havaneses are relatively low maintenance and are relatively easy to care for, making them an ideal selection for busy families. Overall, Havaneses are good with kids due to their friendly and social nature.
The exact amount of minutes to train a Havanese in a day will vary depending on the individual needs of the dog. Generally speaking, you will want to spend between 5 and 20 minutes a day on activities like basic obedience training, teaching potty-training, or socialization exercises. This will include both positive reinforcement and rewards for good behavior. Additionally, try to make sure your Havanese gets regular mental stimulation and physical exercise, as these can help with overall health.
