Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a toy breed of dog, typically weighing anywhere between 4 and 15 pounds (2 kg and 6 kg). They are very intelligent dogs and are easily trainable; characteristic of their breed is their happy-go-lucky and sociable attitude. They are also known for being incredibly easy to groom. They come in a range of colors including gold, black, white, and silver, and they can have either long or short coats. While they do not have an excessive amount of energy, they still require adequate exercise to remain healthy and happy.
The Havanese coat is typically a silky, wavy coat with sometimes slightly curly fur. It can be clipped short, but generally it is kept on the longer side with trims every few months. It comes in many colors including white, cream, red, sable, silver, sand, and black; some individuals may also feature spots or markings. The coat is hypoallergenic and generally doesn't shed much, making it an ideal pet for those with allergies.
You should not feed Havaneses chocolate, alcohol, onions, raisins, grapes, and macadamia nuts. Dogs in general can't digest these types of foods and may experience serious health risks if they eat them. Additionally, Havaneses are prone to weight gain if their diet is not monitored, so fatty and sugary foods should be avoided. Offer a balanced diet of lean proteins, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit treats to 20% of your dog's daily caloric intake.
Preparing your home for a new Havanese is a great way to ensure their comfort and safety. First, identify any potential hazards and remove them. Ensure that any sharp objects or unstable furniture that could cause harm is removed and any wires and electrical outlets are covered. Purchase a big comfortable bed, toys, and food/water bowls for your pet. Create a designated indoor space with their bed and toys. A potty-training area outside the home should be identified and plenty of potty pads should be ready and available.
The size of a Havanese puppy depends on the parents' size and recommended breed standards. Generally, a Havanese puppy can reach a mature size of 8-11 inches high and weighing 7-13 pounds. As a toy breed, you can expect your Havanese puppy to remain at this size throughout its life, though larger variations can sometimes occur. It is recommended that you provide your Havanese puppy with excellent nutrition, proper care and a healthy environment to promote a healthy, steady growth.
Havaneses are highly active dogs who need plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Generally, a Havaneses should get between 30 minutes and two hours of exercise every day. This can include walks, playtime, swimming, running, or any other activity that is fun for your pup. When exerciseing it is important to keep in mind the Havaneses's small size and watched for any signs of fatigue or distress. Smaller and more frequent exercise sessions may be needed in hot weather or if your Havaneses is elderly or has any existing medical conditions.
