First, pick up any small items that your pup could chew on or get stuck in, such as coins, pencils, open zippers, etc. Next, childproof your home as much as possible by covering sharp edges, placing appliance cords out of reach, and anchoring furniture or shelves to the wall so they don't tip over.
Havaneses are considered small to medium-sized dogs, but can certainly appear large due to their dense, fluffy coat. When shaved, they are typically between 8 and 12 inches tall and 12 and 18 pounds in weight. Such size makes them suitable for both urban and rural environments, as they can fit comfortably into smaller homes and yards, yet still be able to have an active lifestyle. Training your Havanese should be a fun and rewarding experience. The best way to start is to create a positive, encouraging atmosphere and use positive reinforcement. Begin with basic obedience commands like "sit," "stay," and "come". Use treats or toys as rewards and be consistent with your rewards. Make sure to keep training sessions short, fun, and stress-free. As the dog progresses, gradually increase the difficulty level of commands. It also helps to incorporate short play sessions to break up the training routine and provide physical and mental stimulation.
