Questions & Answers
Havaneses have a unique combination of traits that make them incredibly interesting. They are incredibly smart and independent, allowing them to quickly learn new tricks. Their appearance is also very distinct, featuring a striking white coat, black points, and a plumed tail. And sometimes, they even have a combination of both long and curly hair. Above all, their loving temperament is astounding, as they are usually very affectionate and loyal.
It is not likely that owning a Havanese will cause you to have allergies. While no animal is truly hypoallergenic, the Havanese is a non-shedding and low-allergen breed. This means that the breed produces less dander than other types of dogs, making it better for people with allergies or asthma. Additionally, the Havanese’s coat is naturally soft and curly, allowing it to trap and capture pet allergens that are commonly found in the fur of other breeds.
It is important to be mindful of what you feed Havaneses and the risk of potential harm should inform you decisions. Sticking to a high-quality diet specifically designed for small breeds is the best solution. Food that is low in fat, rich in protein, and designed to meet the nutritional requirements of toy breeds is the ideal. Furthermore, Havaneses should stay away from table food such as chocolate which can be toxic to them. Rawhide bones can pose a choking hazard, so it's best to pass those up as well.
Preparing for a new Havanese can be an exciting and fun experience! To start, research the breed including the breed’s particular needs, behavior, and health concerns. Equip your living space by setting up a crate with cozy bedding and a separate area for food, toys, and other items. Additionally, stock up on supplies such as food, treats, toys, water and food dishes, a brush, a leash and collar, and any other accessories necessary.
The size of your Havanese puppy is dependent on its parents’ genetic makeup and can vary greatly from puppy to puppy. The breed standard states that the ideal size for an adult Havanese is 8-11 inches in height, while its weight should be 7-13 pounds. However, as every puppy is different, it's hard to predict exactly how big and heavy your puppy will eventually become. It's best to provide your pup with the best environment to support its growth and health, as well as plenty of nutritional meals, exercise and love.
Absolutely! Havanese dogs are active and enjoy getting out and exploring. Taking your pup out on a few short runs is an excellent way to provide some physical and mental stimulation. Depending on your pet's age, you should keep the distances moderate, as their bones are still growing. Avoid running on pavement or concrete, as the surface can be too hard on their little legs. Find softer trails or grassy parks instead. Make sure plenty of water is available, and keep the running sessions short, around 10-15 minutes. The overall key is to make sure your pet remains comfortable.
Havaneses are known for their excellent temperaments, intelligence, and sociability with both people and other animals, so it's no surprise that they are typically considered great with children. They often form strong, loyal bonds with their guardians, including kids, and could be considered an ideal family pet. They are highly energetic, playful, and very patient, so they have the stamina to keep up with the activity level of a family with children. In addition, they have an easy-going attitude, making them well-suited for loving, good-humored households.
The amount of time that you must dedicate to your Havaneses' training depends on several factors, such as their age, size, and breed. Generally speaking, a minimum of 15 minutes per day of concentrated training is recommended for Havaneses. However, if you have the time and resources, it's best to increase this time to 30 minutes per day in order to maximize the efficacy of your training. For instance, you may want to consider adding different forms of exercise such as agility or obedience drills to both physical and mental activities.
