Questions & Answers
Havaneses are one of the most unique and beloved breeds of toy dogs. They have an interesting history that dates back to the sixteenth century, when they were developed in Cuba to be companions for wealthy Cuban families and later became a symbol of the Cuban upper class. The breed also has a fascinating triple coat that includes a thick, soft undercoat, a wavy, woolly topcoat, and a longer, weather-resistant outer coat. Their long, silky coats make them look almost like a tiny lion and give them a lot of personality and character.
The Havanese breed is known for its beautiful, wavy coat. Their coats are usually soft and fluffy with medium-length hair, varying in color from off-white to black and may even contain shadings of brown, gray, and silver. Havanese coats require regular brushing and combing to maintain their luxurious texture. To ensure maximum coat health, frequent bathing with a coat-specific shampoo is important. Most owners will take Canines to the groomer for bi-annual trims, as the longer hair on the Havanese can be difficult to maintain.
Havaneses are small, highly sociable dogs who need to maintain a balanced diet for optimal health, so it's important to be aware of what types of food they shouldn't receive in order to avoid potential health risks. Foods to avoid include any sorts of chocolate products, grapes, raisins, raw onions, and macadamia nuts as they can be toxic to them. Additionally, it is not advised to give these dogs table scraps or dog treats that are high in fat or sugar.
Before you bring your Havanese home, you should be prepared with a few essentials. Be sure that you have a comfy space for your pup to rest such as a crate or bed. Chew toys and interactive toys to keep your pup entertained are important too. You should have regularly scheduled grooming appointments or the appropriate tools for routine grooming if you plan to do it yourself. A leash and collar will allow you to take your pup for safe walks and explore the outside world.
The average Havaneses reaches a height of 8-11 inches and a weight of 7-12 pounds when fully grown. This makes them a part of the Toy breed group, which makes them the perfect lap dog. However, despite their small size, Havaneses have bold and playful personalities. They are intelligent and eager to please, which often results in them figuring out how to do things they might otherwise not be able to do due to their size. Although they are small in size, Havaneses are the perfect companion and often bring a lot of joy and fun to their owners.
Havaneses are generally noted for their love of swimming and of playing in the water. Despite their small size, they are excellent swimmers, boasting powerful hind legs and a strong tail that propel them through the water with speed and grace. They also have jaws that can easily bite and latch onto toys when swimming, allowing them to play fetch with ease in the pool or lake. Their swimming abilities can be further enhanced by teaching them to retrieve toys from the bottom of a pool, which adds to the entertainment and physical activity Havaneses receive while in the water.
Havaneses can make a great fit for first-time pet owners as long as you are dedicated to providing them with plenty of love, attention, exercise, guidance, and training. This breed is intelligent, loving, and loyal, which makes it relatively easy for a novice to manage and socialize. They do require regular haircuts and a relatively high level of maintenance, so it's important that you are prepared to invest time and energy to ensure your pet is healthy.
Absolutely! Havaneses are one of the smartest dog breeds out there. Not only are they capable of learning commands quickly, but they also are very eager to please and make great attentive and devoted companions. It's not uncommon for a Havaneses to understand up to 20 commands or more. They remember commands better the more times they practice them and enjoy the challenge. Havaneses are also creative and entertaining making them great playmates and ideal pups for a game of hide-and-seek.
