Questions & Answers
The Havanese is a delightful toy breed that originated in Cuba. It is a small dog with a medium-length, silky coat that may be solid, or have shades of red, tan, blue, or chocolate. The Havanese has an intelligent and playful nature making it an excellent companion and family pet. Its amicable and good-natured personality also makes it an ideal choice for any household. It is considered hypoallergenic due to its low-shedding nature, making it popular for those with allergies.
The truth is that all dogs have the potential to cause allergic reactions in people, however Havaneses may be less of an allergen than some other breeds. This is because they are considered to have low-shedding coats, meaning that they won't shed very much fur and as a result, fewer allergens will be distributed around the environment. Unfortunately, no guarantees can be made, as with any breed of dog, a particular individual may be more of an allergen than other similar breeds.
It is important to know that Havaneses are quite small dogs, and their diet should reflect this. Avoid feeding them high-calorie treats such as cheese, nuts, and meat, as these can cause weight gain and other health issues. Table scraps should also be avoided, as ingredients in many meals are too high in sodium and fat. They should also not be given products with sugar or sweeteners as these can cause tooth decay. It is best to feed Havaneses a regular diet that is formulated for small dogs, such as kibble and wet food.
The Havanese is a brilliant breed, and while they don't have any special requirements, there are certain things to keep in mind to ensure they live a healthy and happy life. Havanese do need regular exercise and stimulation, to avoid boredom and destructive behavior. Grooming is usually required twice per month; although they do not shed, some of the longer-haired specimens may need extra attention to keep their coats free of knots. Havanese are very social, and time devoted to them is a worthy investment; they love family activities and need a lot of companionship.
Although Havaneses are quite small in size, they are not considered to be a big dog breed. They typically weigh between 7-13 lbs, with a height of 9-11 inches when fully grown, and many consider them to be one of the smallest of the toy breeds. While they may not be particularly large, Havaneses are known for having big personalities, being lively, spunky, and smart. They often bond deeply with their owners and love to spend time playing and cuddling.
Daily exercise is important for a Havanese's health, so you should plan on walking your pup for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour every day. How much exercise your Havanese needs can depend on their age, health, and energy level. If your pup is young and full of energy, they may need closer to an hour of exercise per day. Older, more sedentary dogs may do fine with just 30 minutes of exercise. For the best results, try to have the majority of your pup's daily exercise be walking, which is a very low-impact activity.
Havaneses are a great choice for any family looking for an adorable and loyal companion. These small, spunky pups are very intelligent and easy to train, making them ideal for households with children. With their sweet and gentle personalities, Havaneses make great cuddle buddies and thrive when they form a strong bond with their family. Since their average size is only 8-10 inches tall and 8-12 ounces, Havaneses don’t require a lot of exercise, making them perfect for a busy lifestyle.
The amount of exercise a Havaneses needs depends on the age and health of your pet. Generally, puppies and elderly dogs require more exercise than adults and can benefit from 30 to 45 minutes of activity twice a day. But for most adult dogs, 20 to 30 minutes per day of moderate activity is usually enough. Depending on your pup's energy level, you can increase the amount of time spent exercising or just break up the sessions throughout the day.
