Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a toy-sized breed of dog that originates from Havana, Cuba. It is known for its long, soft, silky coat and an easy-going nature which makes it perfect as a companion animal. The breed is playful yet calm and typically not overly active, making it a great fit for busy households and small homes. Their coats come in many colors and they usually require regular grooming and trims. The Havanese can weigh between 7 and 13 pounds, with the average being between 8 and 11 pounds, and have a lifespan of 15 to 17 years.
Havaneses are considered to be hypoallergenic thanks to their short, non-shedding coat. This breed of dog doesn't have the same allergens that other breeds may have, since it has a single layer coat composed of long straight silky hair that doesn't fall off. The Havaneses' coat is also waterproof, which helps with keeping potential allergens away. As an added benefit, the breed rarely needs to be bathed, which also helps to minimize allergens.
Havaneses should not be fed table food, such as salty snacks or candy, nor should they consume chocolate, which can be toxic to them. Additionally, they should avoid cooked bones, such as chicken bones, as they can splinter and cause an obstruction in the small Havaneses windpipe. Furthermore, stay away from foods that contain a lot of extra sugar or fat, as this can cause an upset stomach, and foods with artificial flavoring or preservatives.
The best way to become a great puppy parent for your Havanese is to provide them with consistent love, care, and attention. Establish a routine for your pup and stick to it as much as possible this can include walks, playtime, grooming, and meals. Keep your pup engaged mentally by teaching them tricks and commands. Take care to provide them with enough exercise and stimulation, as the breed is known to be mischievous and agile. Spend quality time with them every day and use positive reinforcement when training them.
Havanese come in an array of sizes, ranging from toy-sized as small as 9 pounds, to small at 11-14 pounds, to medium at 15-18 pounds, and to large at 19-22 pounds. Depending on the individual, the size of Havanese may vary slightly. Generally, however, adults will range anywhere from 9-22 pounds. The size of a Havanese puppy will vary significantly depending on the size of the parents, the gender of the puppy, and the diet and overall care the puppy receives during its lifetime.
Havaneses are active dogs, and as such they need at least an hour of exercise each day to stay healthy and happy. This should be split into multiple activities, such as walks or playtime, because engaging in activities your pet finds stimulating will help prevent boredom. Although exercise preferences vary, brisk walking, jogging, and swimming are all great activities to keep your Havaneses fit. Incorporating agility exercises and games into their daily routine will also provide much needed mental stimulation.
Absolutely! Havaneses can make wonderful family pets and can adapt easily to different living arrangements. They are a small, cuddly breed that loves attention and loves to explore, making them suitable for first-time owners who may lack the experience of owning a larger breed. In addition, the Havaneses tend to be low-maintenance, requiring minimal grooming or exercise. They are friendly with small children, strangers and other animals when socialized properly. Plus, they may be trained relatively easily due to their relatively small size.
The intelligence of Havaneses is often considered to be comparable to other small breeds. Some owners report that Havaneses can be quite clever, able to pick up on cues and commands quickly. Likewise, other owners have noted Havaneses' alertness and their capacity for problem-solving in order to escape the confines of a kennel or yard. They often take well to training and show an enthusiasm for learning new tricks and games. They're curious, too, and have been known to explore far and wide to seek out new entertainment.
