Questions & Answers
The Havaneses is a remarkable breed of dog because of its unique combination of intelligence and playfulness. The breed is loyal and affectionate, but also known for having an uncanny ability to understand human needs and emotions, making it a true companion as well as a pet. Not many dogs have been as popular and successful in show-rings as the Havaneses, but perhaps even more noteworthy is the breed's longevity. On average, Havaneses live longer than most other breeds, with some living more than 18 years.
Havaneses are known as hypoallergenic breeds, however, they are not 100% allergen free. Although they shed less than most breeds, every pet retains some dander that can cause allergic reactions. All breeds carry the same genetic origins and may cause similar allergic reactions. The best way to determine if a particular Havaneses might have allergenic tendencies is to spend some time with the dog, as the reaction may not be noticeable at first.
In general, Havaneses should not be fed foods that are high in fat or sugar such as sweets, chocolate, and potato chips. Additionally, it is important to not feed your Havaneses raw eggs, raw meat/fish, onions, garlic, and chives as these can be dangerous and could cause serious illness. Additionally, avoid feeding Havaneses grapes, raisins, and currants, as they can cause severe kidney damage and even death. It is important to ensure that all treats are given in moderation and that your Havaneses are receiving a balanced and nutritional diet.
Havanese are a pleasant, low-maintenance breed that does not require special care or exercise demands. However, like all dogs, they do need regular exercise, a nutritious diet, regular grooming, and regular veterinary check-ups. Additionally, they may benefit from certain joint supplements, such as glucosamine or cartilage, to help keep their joints healthy. In terms of training, Havanese do best with positive-reinforcement methods like clicker training and rewards.
The size of your Havanese puppy can vary widely, but generally, this breed will reach 8-11 inches in height and 5-13 pounds in weight when fully grown. That said, smaller puppies may stay at the lower end of those notes, while larger ones may end up a bit bigger. Factors such as gender, parentage, genetics, and diet can all influence the final size of your Havanese. Your pup's growth will also take place over several years and they may be smaller for a while before they eventually reach their adult size.
It is recommended that you walk your Havanese at least 30 minutes a day to help them maintain their general physical and mental health. During the walk, it is important to keep your Havanese engaged so that their minds stay stimulated and active. Mix up their routine by taking them on different routes, and provide ample opportunity for them to explore and sniff. If you feel your pup can handle it, consider adding an extra 10 minutes or so to their walk for additional physical and mental stimulation time. A tired pooch is a happy pooch!
Absolutely, Havaneses make excellent family dogs! This smart, alert, and playful breed is a great addition to any household. These dogs are very social, loyal, and loving. They will quickly become members of the family and bond deeply with their owners. Havaneses are also highly adaptable and can fit into any family lifestyle, from long, active walks to more relaxed lounging around the house. For those who prefer a smaller sized dog, the Havaneses makes for a perfect pick due to its manageable size combined with its cheerful energy.
Training your Havanese is important for creating a well-mannered pet and should begin from an early age. To get the best results, it's important to practice consistency and patience. Start training sessions with the basics mastering basic commands like "sit", "stay", and "come" is important and can form the foundation of training for more complex or desirable behaviors. Treats can also be used to reward and reinforce desired behaviors. Have short and consistent training sessions to keep your Havanese motivated. Interact and play with them to develop positive emotions and bond more closely.
