Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an adorable toy breed known for being friendly, intelligent, and affectionate. They require regular grooming, and without it, their long, luxurious coat can easily become matted. An active breed, the Havaneses loves to play, and owners should be sure to create a routine for daily exercise. These little dogs are highly loyal and protective of their families, and make fantastic watchdogs. Health-wise, the breed is generally quite healthy, but they tend to be prone to skin issues, allergies, and cataracts.
The Havanese coat is a soft, silky texture that can vary from medium to long length. It is often described as wavy or curly but can also be non-shedding and hypoallergenic for those with sensitivities. It is usually kept in an even cut and requires regular combing and brushing to keep it looking its best. Although they do not have an exceptionally thick coat, due to its length and texture, they do need more grooming than other breeds.
While every dog's diet is unique and different nutrition plans are recommended for healthy Havanese, a balanced diet for this breed should contain fresh, high-quality kibble specially formulated for small dogs that have all the essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. In addition, a Havanese will benefit from fresh vegetables such as carrots, green beans, and broccoli, as well as lean proteins such as white poultry, lean beef, or brown rice. Also, do not forget to provide your pup with fresh, clean water at all times.
Making preparations before your new Havanese arrives is essential to ensure a smooth transition for your pup. Start by dogproofing your home. If there might be a chance that your pup can open cabinets, drawers, or doors, put child safety latches on them. Make sure there are no items or plants that can be hazardous to dogs. Secure any cords or wires, and block access to areas where pets are prohibited. Create a designated area for your pup to sleep and play, such as a gated place with their bed, toys, and water.
Havaneses, also known as the Bichon Havanais, are generally considered small dogs. They weigh between seven and twelve pounds, and their height ranges from nine to twelve inches. With their unique curly coats, bright eyes, and friendly personalities, Havaneses are often described as "velcro" dogs—needing constant attention and closeness. Since they're small in size, Havaneses require less exercise than larger dogs. However, they're high in energy and need regular mental stimulation and playtime.
Many Havaneses absolutely love swimming; it provides them with great exercise and an opportunity to socialize. In fact, there are several activities that are organized specifically for Havaneses who enjoy swimming, such as outdoor pool gatherings and trips to the beach. Swimming is also beneficial to a Havaneses' health, by helping to keep their coat and skin in good condition. Many Havaneses will even venture to nearby lakes or rivers to take a dip.
Generally, Havaneses do get along well with kids. They are typically smart, friendly, and playful, making them a great companion for children of all ages. Their high intelligence also means, with proper training, they can easily learn specific commands making them good for teaching children the fundamentals of obedience. With a naturally sweet temperament, Havaneses will rarely show aggression to kids and they love the attention, making them great family companions. Most Havaneses will also have an extra aptitude for being around children and many have stories about Havaneses who have successfully served as babysitters.
Depending on a Havaneses' age and current fitness level, the amount of minutes needed to train every day can vary. Generally speaking, a moderate amount of exercise for these dogs is recommended. A young Havaneses should be walked at least 20 minutes once a day, whereas an adult should be walked and/or exercised for 30 minutes twice daily. Additionally, basic obedience training sessions should be included for about 15 minutes per day. Overall, an average Havaneses would require at least 65 minutes of exercise and training per day in order to stay healthy and fit.
