Questions & Answers
Havaneses, or "Havanese," are the national dog of Cuba and the only breed native to the island. Their ancestry is thought to have started with the now extinct Tenerife Bichon, developed with Spanish, French, Maltese, and other Bichon breeds. Havaneses have long been admired as loyal and happy canine companions. They have a single coat, making them easy to maintain and keep clean. They do not shed, making them an excellent choice for those with pet allergies.
While there are no absolute guarantees, in general Havaneses are considered to be less likely to cause allergic reactions than other breeds of dogs. Allergies to dogs are usually caused by proteins found in the saliva, urine, and dander of the dog, and Havaneses typically have less of this protein than other breeds. Before bringing a Havaneses into your home it is important to speak with your physician or allergist and get their advice on the matter.
Yes, Havaneses do have special dietary needs. Compared to other breeds, Havaneses need more protein than the average dog breed. They should have a diet that is formulated for small breeds with high-quality animal proteins as the main source. In addition, Havaneses should have a diet that contains a balance of essential fatty acids. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids should be included in their diet to provide a healthy skin and coat. They also benefit from beneficial dietary fiber to support digestion and essential vitamins and minerals to promote overall health and vitality.
Havanese do not have any extraordinary requirements, but they still require daily exercise and mental stimulation. Like all other breeds, they need to have timely and regular vet check-ups, and a quality diet to maintain their health. They thrive with consistent training and plenty of love and warmth. They also need regular grooming to make sure their abundant coats stay in great condition.
Havaneses are small dogs and typically weigh between 6-13 pounds and grow no larger than 11-14 inches in height when fully grown. Generally speaking, they stay on the smaller side and can easily be carried in your arms. Of course, there may be some variations in size, but the standard Havaneses size is quite compact, thus making them the perfect companion for small living areas. So, they don't get very big at all and are often considered a great choice for people with limited living space.
Havanese dogs should generally receive an hour of exercise, broken down into two intense 30 minute intervals, daily. These can consist of activities such as playing, running around, remote-control cues, walking, or any combination of these activities. If possible, these activities should take place on soft terrain, as the breed is prone to joint problems and certain bone issues. Additionally, it is always encouraged to take into consideration the dog's age, size, and breed, as each will have different exercise needs.
Havaneses can be great pets for first-time owners due to their affectionate, social personalities. As a compact-sized breed, they don't require excessive exercise though regular walks and time outdoors are beneficial for both the pup and its owner. They have an average life expectancy of 14 to 20 years, making them a long-term pet for a family. Since they are an intelligent breed, they need mental stimulation in order to stay entertained, which can come from activities such as playing, learning simple commands, or problem solving.
Training your Havanese requires time and commitment. Make sure to break tasks up into manageable steps and focus on positive reinforcement. You can start by teaching your pup basic commands like 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'. Start in a quiet area with few distractions so your dog can focus. You can use verbal or hand signals for commands and use small treats to reward your pup. As your pup becomes focused you can add more distractions, gradually making the environment more stimulating. It may take some trial and error but providing loving patience and consistent reinforcement will yield the best results.
