Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a wonderful breed of dog that have many amazing qualities. They are known for their intelligence, loyalty, friendliness, and playfulness. They are also very sociable, so they need plenty of attention and interaction. Havaneses are small in size and low maintenance, making them ideal for apartment living. They learn quickly and are easy to train. Havaneses will alert you and your family to strangers, but they are not a guard dog breed by nature.
Havaneses are a low-shedding breed which makes them a great choice for pet owners who suffer with pet allergies. While this isn't the same as being hypoallergenic, as no dog breed can be clinically proven as such, it does mean less pet hair and dander around the home. The most important precaution to take to reduce allergic reactions is to groom your Havaneses regularly. This removes dead skin cells, pet hair and other debris from the dogs, which can help reduce the risk of an allergic reaction.
Havaneses can eat a variety of foods. Generally, these little dogs will eat anything that tastes good, especially meats and grains. That said, their diet should ideally consist of high-quality whole foods that are appropriate for their size such as small cuts of meat, vegetables, and fruits. Grains like rice, oatmeal, and couscous are great for adding bulk, as are potatoes, squash, and other starchy vegetables. Treats like yogurt, cheese, and eggs should be given in moderation, as they can contribute to weight gain and dental decay.
Before bringing your new Havanese home, it's important to have the essential items to make them feel comfortable and secure in their new home. Make sure you have food and water dishes, food specifically for a small breed, appropriate toys, a durable collar and leash, a bed or crate, treats, waste bags, and a brush. Additionally, it's important to have secure fencing or enclosures so your Havanese can play and explore outside safely and securely.
Havaneses are a small breed of dog, usually topping off at 6-9 inches in height and 8-18 pounds in weight. While some individual dogs may grow to be slightly bigger than the breed standard size due to genetics, they are generally accepted as being one of the smallest breeds of dog. Havaneses can range in size from 5-11 inches in height and 7-20 pounds in weight with any dog outside of this range typically being the result of selective breeding.
on average, it's recommended that a Havanese is walked at least 20 minutes per day, but ideally, it should be more like 30 minutes. This is because the Havanese is an energetic breed, and thus needs plenty of exercises and activities to stay healthy and fit. Depending on the age, health, and energy levels of your Havanese, you may be able to walk him more. Ultimately, the number of minutes you walk your Havanese per day should depend on his physical fitness levels and how much exercise he can realistically handle.
Absolutely! Havaneses are one of the best family dog breeds out there. They're small in size, which makes them easy to handle even in the most compact of homes. They’re gentle and incredibly smart, eager to please their owners and great with children of all ages. They are also independent enough to be content when you’re away, yet still love to be close to their people. They are full of love, affectionate and loyal, making them the perfect family pet. Havaneses tend to be easy to train, often mastering commands quickly.
Training a Havanese is an important part of ensuring your pup grows up to be a well-mannered adult dog. The best way to do so is to use positive reinforcement techniques with treats, praise, and toys. Begin your pup’s training as early as possible, preferably when they are between 8 to 12 weeks old. Start with the basics like leash walking, responding to name, sitting, staying, and coming. Make sure to provide your pup with a safe environment and keep training sessions short, no longer than 15 minutes, and consistently scheduled to help your pup learn quickly.
