Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small, yet spunky breed of dog that originated from Cuba. They are known to be sociable and loving companions that make great family pets. They are known for their long, silky coats and can come in a variety of colors ranging from white to black, and tan to red. Fun facts about Havaneses include that they are not known to bark much, and they can be surprisingly easy to train. They are also highly intelligent and curious, and do well with other animals if socialized early.
Havaneses are known to be non-shedding, providing great comfort and convenience for dog owners heading into the summer months. This beautiful breed of dog, sometimes referred to as the ‘Cotton Ball’ or ‘Cuba’s National Dog’, have a soft and curly coat which also provides them with a high degree of insulation and warmth. Unlike many other non-shedding breeds, Havaneses have only a light seasonal shedding which is significantly less than the average dog breed.
Havaneses are known to have quite a varied diet. As expected, the staples of their diet are usually grains and proteins like rice, beans, and potatoes. Additionally, they consume various nut and legume-based dishes as well as vegetables and fruits, such as tomatoes, onions, and bananas. They are also partial to different forms of seafood, often eating dishes made with mackerel, squid, and fish. Meat is also eaten occasionally, usually chicken, beef, or pork.
Preparing for a new Havanese should be an exciting and rewarding experience. One of the first things you should do is familiarize yourself with the breed's temperament; Havanese are known to be intelligent, curious, and outgoing, so you'll want to make sure you understand their natural behavior. You should also learn about basic training, healthcare, and nutrition. Having the proper supplies ready in advance will also help make the transition easier. This includes bedding, food/water dishes, chew toys, a grooming brush, and a leash/harness.
Havaneses are a small-sized breed of dog, typically weighing 7-13 pounds and standing 9-11 inches tall at the shoulder. Though their size may be small, their personalities are anything but! While size is not typically considered when breeders are selecting for this breed, some dogs may be slightly larger or smaller due to individual genetics or other factors. A good rule of thumb to go by when selecting Havaneses is that they should fit in your lap comfortably when standing. In other words, Havaneses come in one size small but with plenty of personality!
Every Havanese breed is different, so it's important to consider your individual pup's health, size, age, and energy levels when determining a healthy walking schedule. As a general rule of thumb, plan to walk your Havanese for at least 30 minutes a day. This should be divided into shorter walks, such as two 15-minute walks spaced out throughout the day. If your Havanese is smaller or an elderly pup, you may want to stick to two 10-minute walks.
Havaneses can make great first-time owners, but this depends on a variety of factors. These include a pet owner's lifestyle, the amount of available time and energy that they have for the pet, and the financial commitment they are willing to make. Havaneses are small and are generally easier to manage than large dogs. In addition, they are naturally social animals and, when properly trained and socialized, they can be loving companions. However, it's important to ensure that they are getting enough mental and physical stimulation and enough attention.
Absolutely! Havaneses are considered to be one of the smartest dog breeds around. They are excellent problem solvers and can learn commands quickly; some owners have even taught Havaneses to do complicated tasks like opening doors or fetching objects. In addition, Havaneses are known to be extremely food motivated dogs, which can make training easier. Overall, the Havaneses' intelligence makes them a perfect companion for any owner, as long as they keep up with plenty of mental and physical activity!
