Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a unique and beautiful breed of dog originating from Cuba. It's a toy breed with a friendly, lively disposition that loves to spend time with its family. The Havanese has a non-shedding coat which comes in a wide range of colors including white, cream, silver, gold, chocolate, brindle, and sable. They generally have wavy, long hair that does not need to be trimmed, although brushing and regular grooming are still recommended.
Havaneses have a dense and curly coat which can make them a hypoallergenic breed for some. This is because the curly coat doesn't cause as much dander, which are the particles of dead skin that cause allergies, to be released into the air. Yet, not all Havaneses are created alike. Some may have a lower shedding coat which can appeal to some allergy sufferers, while others have a higher shedding coat which may not be as suitable for those with allergies.
Havaneses do have special dietary needs compared to other breeds. They have a higher need for dietary fats, minerals, and certain amino acids. To meet these requirements, Havaneses should have their diet formulated and monitored by a veterinarian to ensure that they are getting the proper nutrition for their size and activity level. The diet should also be supplemented with additional fatty acids such as linoleic acid and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Also, help them maintain a healthy bodyweight by avoiding the overfeeding of treats or additional food.
In preparation for your new Havanese, it's important to get your home ready for your pet. Make sure your home is safe for your pup by securing any loose wires, anything that could become a choking hazard, and being mindful of other pet-proofing needs. Ensure you have all the items needed such as food, treats, bowls, leash, collar or harness, bed, toys, and grooming supplies. Also, think about researching training and socialization tips and any other tips in order to help your Havanese adjust to its new home.
Although Havaneses are not considered large dogs in the traditional sense, they are considered to be a sturdy and substantial breed of small dog. Typically, they generally stand between 8-11 inches tall, weighing between 7-13 pounds. However, despite their small stature, they have a thick, wooly coat, and are surprisingly powerful and energetic, making them appear larger than they are. Additionally, Havaneses are also considered to be one of the most active breeds of small dog, usually displaying a playful, vivacious personality.
Havaneses are known for their boundless energy and playful personality, making them an incredibly active breed of canine. As such, these feisty little dogs need plenty of daily exercise to remain healthy, lively, and content. Typical activities that will keep your Havaneses in top shape include long walks, running, fetch, interactive toy play, or agility training. Even a few minutes of mental stimulation and physical exercise can help to alleviate negative behaviors frequently seen in an overly enthusiastic Havanese, such as chewing and barking.
Havaneses are certainly excellent family dogs! These lively and loyal little pups have the perfect mix of energy, intelligence, and affection that make them an ideal companion for the whole family. They are small enough to be easily handled and will enjoy spending time with all family members, as well as small children. Plus, Havaneses have been known to be great with other animals, meaning multiple pets in the home will likely get along well.
Training your Havanese can be an enjoyable experience for both you and your pup. Start by establishing a routine and setting ground rules. It is helpful to use the same commands for each command you wish to teach your pup. Keep the sessions short, especially when first starting out, as this will reduce distraction and help with consistency. Praise your pup when they do something you asked of them. Use positive reinforcement to ensure you encourage desired behaviors. It is also important to be patient and kind with your pup throughout the training process.
