Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small, intelligent breed of toy dog that is uncharacteristically lively and friendly. They weigh around 8-12 pounds and are easy to groom. A great companion for both families and individuals, their loyalty and good nature make them great house pets. They enjoy attention from their owners and need frequent walks and exercise. Training is easy and quick, with the Havaneses being eager to learn. Generally healthy and hardy, they do require regular checkups with the Vet and should not be over-exercised in hot and humid weather.
Havaneses, also known as Bichons Havanezes, are considered a non-shedding breed due to their single coat made up of mostly texture and curl, as opposed to shedding breeds, which generally have a double coat of fur. This single layer of fur ensures the hair stays close to the body, replacing lost strands regularly instead of shedding chunks of their coat as other breeds do. While Havaneses will not cause allergic reactions due to shedding, their fur will need to be brushed and cleaned on a regular basis to maintain its healthy appearance.
Your Havanese should enjoy a nutrient-balanced diet that is formulated for small breeds. Make sure that the food you feed them is of a high quality and contains an appropriate balance of proteins, fats, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals. It is also important to take the size and age of your Havanese into consideration when deciding what to feed them. A puppy formula is especially important for growing Havanese. You can also consider adding fresh fruits and vegetables for a complimentary meal to your regular kibble.
Before you welcome your new Havanese pup into your home, there are certain preparations you can make to ensure your pup is comfortable. Firstly, make sure your home is a safe and comfortable environment. This includes puppy-proofing the area by removing any dangerous items such as cables, hazardous chemicals, and anything that could easily be swallowed. You should also test any outside areas for any potential hazards. Next, make sure you have all the necessary items for your pup such as food, water bowls, brush, nail clippers, pee pads, and bedding.
The size of your Havanese puppy can vary, but they will generally reach a height range between 8-11 inches tall and a weight range between 7-13 pounds when fully grown. It typically takes Havanese puppies about 12-18 months to reach their full size. During this time, they will go through periods of growth and development. All puppies grow at a different pace, depending on their individual genetics and lifestyle, so it's important to monitor their diet and exercise to make sure they grow healthily.
Havaneses are intelligent and active dogs and as such, need ample exercise. They should have a minimum of two 20-30 minute long walks per day, along with some playtime in between.
Havaneses can make great companions for first-time owners. As a toy breed they are generally friendly and intelligent and tend to bond closely with their humans. Many of the traits that make them good lapdogs such as their calm demeanor and adaptability, make them great for apartment living if their active needs are met. Havaneses can be relatively easy to train, so they are well-suited for beginner owners. However, in order to maintain the pup's positive outlook on life, it is important to regularly provide enrichment activities both mentally and physically.
Training your Havanese starts with providing a clear structure and understanding of expectations. It's important to establish yourself as a leader in a gentle, positive way that promotes self-confidence and reduces risk of anxiety or behavior problems. Basic obedience commands may include 'sit', 'come', 'down', and 'stay'. Start by giving your Havanese treats and verbal rewards for completing desired behaviors, gradually moving towards the target reward. Keep training sessions fun and short and keep the language consistent and clear. After mastering basic obedience, you may want to try a few more advanced tasks including agility and tricks.
