Questions & Answers
Havaneses are extremely intelligent and loving dogs, which makes them an ideal companion. They are popularly known for their hypoallergenic coats and they tend to stay in the same size and shape for many years. Furthermore, these dogs are comfortable both indoors and outdoors and known for their adaptability. They have long, silky coats which come in a variety of colors such as black, white, reddish-brown, and cream. Furthermore, Havaneses are a very social breed and will usually form a strong bond with their owners.
Havaneses are considered to be a non-shedding breed, meaning they generally don't lose a lot of their fur. While they do need to be groomed regularly in order to ensure their coat stays healthy and neat, they are not known for leaving hair everywhere in the house like some other breeds. They have a soft, curly coat of fur that is low-maintenance and does not require a lot of brushing.
Havaneses, like any other dog breed, should eat a balanced, healthy diet appropriate for their size and energy level. Generally, they thrive on high-quality dry kibble made with natural ingredients including proteins like chicken, beef, or salmon. They can also enjoy cooked chicken, lean ground beef, eggs, and specially formulated treats. To keep their digestive systems happy, they should get plenty of access to clean, fresh water and, since their bodies are low in taurine, a supplement with that specific amino acid is recommended.
Before getting a Havanese, it is important to stock up on a few essentials. Grooming supplies should be a priority, including a good brush and a pet-safe shampoo for occasional baths. Make sure to get some quality dog food as well as safe, chew-resistant toys for playtime. Proper collar and harness, plus plenty of spare leashes, are also important. Some special treats never hurt, but remember to not overfeed. Soft blankets and a pet bed will give them a cozy spot to relax.
Havanese are a small breed of dog, typically ranging between 8-11 inches in height and 8-16 pounds in weight. On the smaller end of the spectrum, Havaneses can sometimes measure as low as 6 inches in height and weigh 4-6 pounds. On the larger end, some Havaneses can reach up to 12 inches in height and are more likely to weigh between 14-18 pounds. Generally, males are larger and heavier than females in the breed.
Many Havaneses love to swim! This is not only because the activity is enjoyable, but because it's also a great workout. Swimming is a hugely beneficial exercise that tones muscles, builds endurance, increases flexibility, and strengthens the cardiovascular system. In addition, Havaneses benefit from the mental clarity it brings. Swimming can be soothing and calming or energizing and invigorating depending on one's pace. There are many opportunities for Havaneses of all ages to find a swimming program that works for them, from lessons to water aerobics to competitive swimming and more.
Typically, Havaneses get along very well with kids! They are naturally friendly and outgoing and have a lot of patience for playing and interacting with their young friends. Havaneses usually make great family pets as they love the company, affection, and attention that children can provide. They are also intelligent and easy to train, making them the perfect companions for kids of all ages. With some exposure to children at a young age, a Havaneses can learn how to be gentle and respectful.
The amount of time that you need to dedicate to training your Havaneses per day really depends on their age, level of training, and overall health. To get the most out of each training session, puppies should have about 15-20 minutes of interactive training per day, while adult Havanese should have an hour or more of scheduled training per day. Of course, consistent positive reinforcement goes a long way when it comes to training these smart little dogs, so don't forget to give your Havanese lots of praise throughout your training sessions.
