Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an old breed of toy dogs originating from Cuba during the 17th century. They are well known for their clown-like personalities and alert nature. Fun facts about Havaneses include their signature high-maintenance hairdos that need regular care and grooming, as well as their intelligence and problem-solving skills. They are also known to enjoy learning tricks and the occasional game of fetch. Havaneses are incredibly social and thrive best when provided with lots of attention and love. They are also known to respond well to training, making them ideal family pets.
Although it may not be as well known as some other breeds, Havaneses are actually quite low-shedding. Since they have a longer coat than other short-haired breeds, their shedding is not typically as significant as in other breeds. As a result, owners do not need to worry quite as much about daily grooming or extensive cleaning as with other breeds. Additionally, their coat is waterproof, so they require less washing if they get wet.
When it comes to feeding Havaneses, it's important to be mindful of which foods are appropriate. Dogs of this breed may be small, but they are prone to becoming overweight, so it is best to keep their diets balanced and healthy. While most ‘people food’ should be avoided, there are a few specific items that are particularly bad for these pups. Avoid items that are high in fat, sugar, and salt, such as ice-cream, bacon, fast-food, chips, and processed meats.
Before bringing your new Havanese into your home, there are some important steps you should take to make sure it's comfortable and ready for its new environment. Start by puppy-proofing the area where your dog will be spending most of its time. Make sure to remove or secure all small objects that can choke your pup and any poisonous items. Remove items like books that will likely be chewed on or tossed around. Provide a safe space indoors, like a kennel or crate, and make sure it has soft bedding and plenty of toys.
Havaneses, also known as "the little dog with the big heart," come in a variety of sizes. Generally, Havaneses range anywhere between 8-15 pounds, with the most common sizes tending to be around 10-12 pounds. However, it is possible to find Havaneses of other sizes, depending on the specific breed of the dog. In addition, height can range from 8-12 inches high, although 8-9 inches is the ideal size. As with other breeds, Havaneses are judged according to THEIR size and the size of THEIR parents.
Havaneses are an active breed of small dog, and should ideally have at least 30-60 minutes of dedicated exercise a day. Depending on their age, health, and energy levels, they may require more or less. As a general guideline, Havaneses should be given plenty of opportunity for free-roaming walks, short play or running sessions, and mental stimulation activities to keep their active minds occupied. Strength and agility training, such as dog agility classes, are an excellent way to promote healthy physical activity.
Absolutely! Havaneses are incredibly loyal, loving, and social dogs that make wonderful family pets. They have a natural affinity for people, so they get along well with adults, kids, and other pets alike. Thanks to their intelligence and trainability, Havaneses are happy to please their owners and are generally obedient and well-mannered. On top of that, they have a calm, relaxed nature that makes them great for living in small spaces and apartments, and they require minimal exercise, so they're a very low-maintenance pet.
Training your Havanese starts with teaching them basic commands such as 'sit', 'down', 'heel', and 'come'. Spend time every day practicing the commands, rewarding them with a treat or their favorite toy for good behavior. You can also teach them to interact with other animals in a socially acceptable way. Start with controlled settings like the dog park where your Havanese can practice the commands around other dogs. Praise them when they follow the commands and give them treats for good behavior.
