Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an incredibly lovable breed of dog with a spunky and spirited personality. They are known for their fluffy, white coats and for having a very human-like expression when they look up at you. Havaneses have a unique vocal range and are known to mimic their owners, especially if their owners have an accent! Their coats don’t shed and can tolerate heat, making them an ideal breed for people living in warmer climates. They are also an incredibly intelligent breed, and can learn new tricks and commands with relative ease.
The Havanese breed is known for its long, silky and wavy coat that is typically far longer on the body, chest, ears and also on the topskull. It has a soft, luxurious texture that may give the appearance of a human head of hair. Most coats will be single-layered, however, there is a possibility of a double-layered coat with a shorter, coarse outercoat and a soft, dense undercoat.
Havaneses generally eat a diet that consists of nutritious and well-balanced meals. This includes small portions of lean proteins and carbohydrates, with an emphasis on proteins such as chicken, fish, and lean beef. Fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, eggs, and yogurt are also common in a Havaneses diet. They have a taste for higher-fat meals and snacks such as cheeses and sausages, as well as sugary treats such as candy and baked goods. The Havaneses have a particular affinity for dairy products, often choosing to eat yogurt and cheese as snacks.
When considering owning a Havanese, there are certain essential items that should be acquired prior to bringing home the new furry family member. As far as supplies, a bed or crate, collar or harness, leash, identifications tags, food and water bowls, and a brush or comb are all must-haves. To keep the pup happy and healthy, there are also some basic items that should be on hand such as toys, treats, a carrier, and any appropriate shampoos or conditioning sprays to fit the type of coat.
The size of your Havanese puppy will depend on the genetic makeup it inherits from its parents. Generally, Havanese puppies reach their full size at about nine months of age and are considered adults at around 18 months. On average, they can reach anywhere from 8 to 13 inches in height and weigh between 7 and 13 pounds. However, some puppies may be as small as 6 or as big as 15-16 lbs.
Havaneses, like all dog breeds, should be given at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. This can include walking, running, or playing in the yard. Depending on the age and health of your Havaneses, the exercise needs may vary. Puppies may require more exercise than older dogs, and dogs with existing medical problems may need less. To ensure that your Havaneses stays healthy and active, it is important to tailor their exercise plan to meet their individual needs.
Havaneses make excellent family dogs! They are small, friendly, and easy to train, with an instinct to bond closely with their people. This breed has a zest for life, enjoys playing, and loves being around children and other family members. Havaneses are affectionate and always eager to please, but they are also strong-minded and alert, which makes them good watchdogs. They rarely bark and are adaptable to nearly any type of living arrangement, whether that's in an apartment or a house with a backyard.
Training a Havanese is a rewarding experience, but like all breeds, it may require patience and consistency. They are intelligent and generally eager to please, so they learn quickly, but that can also make them a bit headstrong since they understand the rules and can push their boundaries. It's important to find a balance between establishing boundaries and positive reinforcement so that your pup has the structure it needs, while also feeling rewarded for its accomplishments.
