Questions & Answers
Havaneses are classified as Toy dogs, meaning they are small, friendly, and easily adaptable, making them a great choice of companion. They are also classified in the Bichon family which includes several other white, curly-haired small breeds. As far as personality, Havaneses are known for being affectionate and especially devoted to their owners, as well as intelligent, lively, and cheerful. This combination of traits makes them adaptable to almost any environment and easy to train.
The Havanese has an incredibly soft coat that is surprisingly long for a breed of this size. Its coat is considered non-shedding and hypoallergenic, making it perfect for those with mild allergies to fur. In terms of its texture, the coat is silky and can range in length from 3-5 inches long. The most common colors are white, chocolate, black and various combination of parti-color. Even if trimmed at the bottom to give the pup a more manageable look, the Havanese still maintains its elegant look with its silky, long coat.
Havaneses are omnivores, so they will typically eat a variety of different foods. Their diet should include high-quality dry dog food, as well as a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. They love lean meat like cooked chicken and turkey which should be served in small amounts and never be given as raw or undercooked. Cooked fish is also great for Havaneses, as long as all of the bones have been removed.
Before you get a Havanese, it's important to have the essential supplies. Be sure to get a crate, a comfortable bed, a collar and leash, a couple of food and water bowls, a brush, chew toys, and treats. You'll also want to stock up on food specifically formulated for small dogs. You'll need to make sure your home is Havanese-proofed, too items like electric cords, poisonous plants, and shoes should all be out of reach. Finally, consider enrolling in obedience classes to help build the bond between you and your dog.
Savannahs (Havanese) are considered small-medium sized dogs, and compared to other breeds, are relatively small. However, compared to some smaller breeds, they can seem somewhat larger as they tend to have a bit more muscle. Because of their size, they are a popular choice for those with limited living spaces such as apartments or condos, but they still enjoy a good walk or play session. They do not do well in extreme temperatures, however, which makes them an ideal indoor breed.
Yes, Havaneses are active dogs, and need plenty of physical and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. They love to romp and play around, and benefit from daily walks and occasional runs. They are also very smart and eager to please and learn, making them well-suited for dog sports or activities like agility and rally. They make great watchdogs and enjoy interactions with familiar people. In addition, they tend to stay puppy-like well into adulthood, keeping up their energy levels and playful nature.
Generally, Havanese dogs do get along with other pets quite well. They are known to be affectionate, loyal, and sociable dogs, and can often make great companions to dogs, cats, and other animals. However, any time two animals are introduced, it is important to introduce them slowly and keep a close eye on their interactions. Acclimating to a new environment can take time, and ensuring that both animals feel comfortable and safe is paramount.
Training a Havanese requires patience and consistency. Start by getting your pup used to the basics, like coming when called and sitting and staying on command. From there, work your way up to more advanced behavior such as leash walking, crate training, and potty training. Once the basics are established, it's helpful to keep the pup's attention and reward successful behavior with lots of treats, praise, and petting. Don't forget to schedule regular playtime and provide plenty of mental and physical exercise.
