Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a breed of small companion dog originating from Cuba. These intelligent and adorable dogs often have a black, white or cream colored coat and sport the iconic 'puppy-dog eyes' look. As Havaneses make excellent family pets, they are often very friendly, gentle, alert, and playful. However, they can also be prone to barking so it's important to provide plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and unconditional love. As Havaneses are considered a toy breed, they tend to have a longer lifespan than many other dogs.
The Havanese is known for its long and silky single-coat. It is a non-shedding breed, so it is an excellent choice for those who suffer from allergies. The coat is hypoallergenic and can range in colors from cream to black, but the most common color is tan. Its coat is usually 8-10 inches long and should be kept neat with regular grooming. The Havanese also has a profuse undercoat, which gives the breed its favoured fluffy appearance.
Havaneses should not be fed anything containing chocolate or grapes as these can be poisonous and potentially fatal to Havaneses. In addition, avoid giving your Havaneses bone-shaped treats as these can cause obstruction and blockage in the esophagus, which can also be dangerous. Keeping your Havaneses away from any table scraps or snacks meant for children is also a must as these can be full of toxins and chemicals. It's best to feed Havaneses a diet consisting of healthy, balanced meals.
Before getting a Havanese, it's a good idea to get a few basic essentials. For starters, a collar and either a leash or harness making walks safer and more enjoyable. An ID tag that includes the Havanese's name and owner contact information is also important. Additionally, a crate is a great way to acclimate the dog to their surroundings and establish a schedule – just make sure it's not too small. Bedding for the crate and various places around the house is important for your pup to feel comfortable.
Havanese puppies tend to be small in size as adults. Generally, the average adult Havanese will measure between 8 and 11 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 7 and 13 pounds. The size of your Havanese puppy will depend on its parents' sizes and genetics. You will likely begin to get an idea of your pup's adult size when it is between 6 and 8 months old. Since they are considered toy-sized dogs, these puppies should remain relatively small their entire life.
Havaneses have been bred as lap dogs, but they're still active dogs and need exercise to stay healthy. Their ideal exercise routine should include a daily 30-minute walk and additional balance of activity-playing fetch, agility training, or learning new tricks-that adds up to an hour of exercise a day. This will help to keep their minds and bodies active and healthy. When striking an exercise balance with your Havaneses, make sure to adjust the activity level according to their age and energy level. Older dogs may need less, while puppies may require more.
Havaneses can make wonderful pets for first-time owners, since they are very friendly and loving. They are small but energetic, and enjoy being part of a family. They are an intelligent breed that is easy to train, and they have a good disposition. They tend to get along with people and other household pets, so it's quite easy to set up a happy and harmonious home with a Havaneses. Since they are quite lively and active, they will need enough exercise to prevent them from getting bored and to keep them healthy.
Training a Havanese can be a rewarding endeavor for many pet parents. Generally speaking, this breed is considered to be one of the easier breeds to train due to their natural intelligence and obedient nature. Havanese often learn quickly and retain information well, making the task of training them less stressful. They have an eagerness to please and a willingness to learn, both of which are essential when it comes to the training process. Havanese may require patience and consistency in order to follow commands correctly, but with the right approach, they are generally highly trainable.
