Questions & Answers
Havaneses belong to the toy group of dogs. This group is made up of small, compact dogs that have been bred to fill a companion role. Standing up to 11 inches tall, these dogs are known for their abundant energy, smarts, and people-oriented personalities. They usually have a silky white coat, sometimes with black and/or brown accents. There is also a Bichon Havaneses, which are a hybrid of a Bichon Frise and a Havaneses, and will usually have a longer coat than the purebred Havaneses.
A Havaneses should not cause you to have allergies. This breed of toy-sized, longhaired dogs is generally considered hypoallergenic because their coats are considered non-shedding, reducing the amount of dander that is airborne. However, it is important to note that some people may have sensitivities to the breed's fur or the dog's saliva on its coat, which may cause allergic reactions even in non-shedding breeds.
Havaneses typically eat a diet that is high in proteins and fats. They can eat any type of meat, including pork, chicken, beef, and seafood, as well as eggs, cheese, and fish. Vegetables and fruits, such as apples, bananas, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, celery, cauliflower, squash, and lettuce are also acceptable. Feeding them healthy snacks such as vegetables, fruits, whole-grains, and nuts is also recommended. Keeping treats to a minimum is key since too much sugar can have a negative effect on your pup’s health.
Havanese do not have any special requirements beyond the usual standard of care for all dogs. The most important factor in caring for a Havanese is providing them with plenty of exercise, attention, and healthy food. They should also be groomed regularly to maintain their fur, and receive regular vet check-ups to ensure their overall good health. Havanese are naturally friendly and get along well with children, people, and other animals. They may also need to attend obedience classes or have some type of training to ensure good behavior.
Havaneses are considered to be a smaller breed of dog. They usually range in size from 12 to 15 inches in height, which is much smaller than most large dog breeds. While they are small in size, they boast an abundance of energy and playfulness. They may be small and compact, but they can bring a lot of joy into your life. Havaneses make great pets for those who are looking for a loyal companion that doesn't need a lot of space.
Havaneses are an active breed of dog and generally need similar amounts of exercise that other small breeds do. They require a daily walk to stay healthy and stimulated, and plenty of playtime with family should also be provided. Depending on size (as well as age), Havaneses should be walked 20-45 minutes daily and can keep up with more active activities, such as agility competitions and longer walks with increased intensity. If the exercise needs of the breed are not met, they can become overly energetic, which can lead to destructive behavior inside and around the home.
Generally, Havaneses are known for getting along well with other pets, such as cats and other small animals. In many cases, they develop an understanding and even a bond with these other animals, making them a great addition to a family with multiple pets. In some cases, however, proper introductions should be handled slowly and carefully as some Havaneses take a while to warm up to new pets. Regardless, with patience and gentle handling, most Havaneses can make wonderful, fun additions to any family with other pets.
With their intelligence and eagerness to please their owners, Havaneses do tend to be considered smart dogs. They are very adept at learning commands and other useful tricks, and have an impressive memory. These attributes can come in extremely useful, both for tasks such as herding, retrieving, and obedience trials, and for providing companionship and making life just a little bit easier. In addition, Havaneses also have an intuitive nature that allows them to read their owners' emotions very well, further contributing to their reputation as being smart dogs.
