Questions & Answers
Havaneses are an incredibly spirited and lively breed of small dogs that are commonly seen in Cuba. They are a hybrid of various breeds, the foundation of which is a Bichon Frise. They normally have a curly, soft white coat and, due to their lively attitude, an almost perpetual smile on their faces. Havaneses need quite a bit of attention and activity, such as daily walks and playtime, to maintain a happy and healthy lifestyle. They are outgoing and friendly, making them excellent lap dogs and they have a natural affinity with children.
The Havanese has a unique and beautiful coat. It is double-coated, its outer layer is composed of long, straight, non-shedding hair that tends to stand off from the body. Its inner layer is composed of soft, fluffy, and wavy fur. Havanese coats can be a variety of colours including white, cream, champagne, gold, and/or black. The coat should not be excessively long but instead should remain at a medium length with a profuse undercoat.
Your Havanese should be fed a high-quality, balanced diet that provides appropriate levels of energy, protein, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. The type of food you choose to feed your Havanese should be based on your pet's age and activity level. Puppies generally require a food that is higher in fat and protein to meet their high energy needs. Adult dogs, on the other hand, should usually be fed foods that contain an appropriate balance of macronutrients.
Before you welcome a new Havanese to your home, it's important to do some preparation. To start, consider investing in some supplies that your pup will need, like a comfortable dog bed, food and water dishes, and toys. You'll also want to pick up some basic grooming items such as a brush, nail clippers, and shampoo. Also, make sure you puppy-proof your living space, blocking off any areas where your pup could become trapped and removing any dangerous items like dangling cords, chemicals, and plants.
The size of your Havanese puppy will depend on several things; genetics, breeding, and nutrition among them. On average, Havanese puppies tend to become small to medium-sized dogs that are roughly 8-11 inches tall and can weigh up to 18 pounds. Some may stay as small as 4-6 pounds when fully grown. Your Havanese puppy's size also depends on its particular breed, as there are slight variations between the Toy, Teacup, Standard, Miniature, and Pocket-sized Havanese Dogs.
Havaneses are small, energetic dogs that need plenty of regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Depending on the age and energy levels of a Havaneses, daily walks for around 20 minutes to an hour is usually recommended. As well as daily walks, it's important to play activities with your Havaneses for 15-40 minutes each day. This can be in the form of a game of fetch, tug-of-war, hide-and-seek or following a scent trail.
Yes, Havaneses make excellent pets for first-time owners. They are a smart breed that is often described as having a ‘clown-like’ personality, so they will stay engaged, entertained, and happy when you’re around. They usually get along well with children, and they generally are very friendly and have outgoing personalities. As far as maintenance goes, they do not need a ton of grooming; their coat sheds very lightly, so brushing once a week should do the trick. They are an active dog and need daily walks and playtime.
Training your Havanese can be a fun and rewarding experience. The first step is to get to know your pup so that you can understand their personality and what works best for them. Then, start with basic obedience commands like “sit” and “come”. Incorporate positive reinforcement and provide a lot of love and praise when your pup follows your commands correctly. Practice is key when training your Havanese, and schedules should be consistent with daily repetition of commands.
