Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a long-haired breed of dog that originated in Cuba in the 19th century. They are small to medium-sized dogs, weighing between 7 and 13 pounds and standing at 9-11.5 inches tall. Havaneses have silky, straight hair that does not shed and requires regular brushing. Their coat comes in a variety of colors including black, white, cream, and silver-brindle. personality-wise, Havaneses are social and friendly, making great family companions. They do best in households with a fenced yard and lots of interaction.
Managing allergies with Havaneses is possible, however, the best course of action would depend on the type of allergy. If the allergy is to airborne particles, such as pollen, dust or pet dander, indoors, you can try to decrease the irritants in your home by regularly dusting and vacuum, and using hypoallergenic cleaning products. If the allergy is food-based, you should consult your vet about what type of food is best for your pet.
It is important to provide your Havaneses with a nutritious, well-balanced diet. Some treats and human food should be avoided altogether. Foods with high amounts of fat, like potato chips, cheese, bacon, and other processed foods, can negatively impact your pet's health and contribute to obesity. Garlic, onions, and chive can be toxic to Havaneses and should never be fed. Refined sugar, candy, baked goods, and alcoholic beverages are also not suitable for Havaneses.
Havanese, like any other breed of dog, have some special requirements to maximize their health and wellbeing. As a breed, they can be prone to certain health problems, such as hip dysplasia and retinal atrophy, so it is important to routinely visit the vet for checkups. Additionally, Havanese require frequent grooming to keep their coat healthy and maintain their non-shedding feature; brushing and clipping should be done two to four times per month at minimum. They're also high energy dogs and require plenty of exercise to keep them in great shape.
The size of your Havanese puppy will depend on a number of different factors. Genetically, the breed generally weighs 7 to 13 pounds and stands between 8.5 and 11.5 inches tall at the shoulder when fully grown. However, nutrition levels and environmental factors can have an impact on an individual dog's growth and development and can influence their adult size somewhat. Additionally, some puppies grow faster or slower than their counterparts, so it's possible your pup could be either slightly bigger or smaller than the breed-standard.
Although many dog owners list running as an activity they partake in with their four-legged friends, the same cannot be said for all breeds. Depending on the breed, some dogs are better suited for a slow paced walk rather than an all out run. Havanese are generally low-energy, toy-breed dogs and running, especially long distance running, could put your pup at risk for injury due to their small stature.
Absolutely! Havaneses make great family dogs. They have lots of energy and love to be around people, but can also be independent-minded and intelligent. They make wonderful companions and are usually very social, friendly dogs. They are small, so they don't require a lot of exercise, but they are fond of playtime. Their coats don't require a lot of maintenance, but regular grooming will help to keep them healthy and looking their best. Most Havaneses are very eager to please, and they always enjoy being part of the family and getting plenty of attention.
Havaneses are often considered to be one of the smartest breeds of domesticated dog. Their intelligence, along with their good-natured nature, makes them an excellent choice for families with children, and their devoted and affectionate personality makes them a great companion. Known for their intelligence and trainability, these dogs learn quickly and have sharp problem-solving skills. They can quickly comprehend commands from their owners, but may be stubborn at times when they do not want to obey.
