Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a special and unique class of dog, and are beloved by families and individuals alike. Originally from the Caribbean country of Cuba, these small but mighty pups are classified as a type of Bichon, which is part of the non-sporting group of dogs. Their distinguishing feature is their short, fluffy white coat that, despite its slight wavy texture, is as soft as a plush toy. They have large, dark eyes, tiny ears that flop down, and a stubby, but sturdy tail.
While all breeds of dogs may cause some level of allergic reaction, it is unlikely that a Havaneses will cause significantly more allergies than any other breed of dog. Some people experience a greater allergic response to a particular breed of dog due to their individual sensitivity, but there is no evidence to suggest that Havaneses cause significantly more allergies than other breeds. Generally speaking, allergies to dogs are caused by the pet’s dander, saliva, and urine, so the best way to avoid allergies is to keep your home clean and vacuum regularly.
Havaneses are small companions that need special nutrition to stay healthy. A balanced Havaneses diet may include dry kibble, fresh vegetables, and wet food such as canned fit for consumption for dogs. In addition, small amounts of lean meats, fish, eggs, and other animal proteins could be added in as treats. In general, Havaneses should get antioxidant-rich, low-sodium, and low-fat diet that is close to their ancestral diet.
Yes, Havanese do have special requirements. Because of their long coat, these dogs need to be groomed regularly. Depending on their activity level, they should also get plenty of exercise; at least an hour a day of walking, running, or playing is necessary to keep them fit and healthy. It is also important to take them to the vet for check-ups and immunizations, as well as get them microchipped if they aren't already. Socialization is also important in making sure they are well-behaved and friendly with people and animals.
Havanese dogs are considered to be small-sized dogs, usually ranging from 7 to 13 inches in height and 7 to 18 pounds in weight. With an average life expectancy between 12 and 15 years, the Havaneses are an ideal companion that can fit in many living spaces. While they may not be considered “big dogs”, they have personalities that create big impacts and are excellent family pets. Havanese dogs are loyal and affectionate, displaying intense devotion to their owners.
Typically, Havaneses do enjoy the water and often demonstrate a natural curiosity in swimming. Although the breed is not well-known for being a strong swimmer, many active Havaneses love taking a dip in a pool or lake. Cooler water temperatures give them an adrenal boost and who could resist the lure of finding something delightful below the surface? When paired with their natural affinity for retrieving, it's no wonder Havaneses seek out the opportunity to take a dip.
Havaneses can make great pets for first-time owners. They are generally friendly, intelligent, and easy-going, making them a great fit for nervous or inexperienced owners. They require minimal grooming and have a playful, affectionate personality ideal for someone seeking a low-maintenance companion. Additionally, their small size means they can fit into many small homes or apartments, and their intelligence means they can usually be trained quickly. While they can be stubborn at times, they are willing to please their owners and learn fairly quickly.
Though Havaneses are classified as toy dogs, they are still known as highly intelligent, loyal and affectionate canines. They learn commands quickly and are adept at problem-solving due to their remarkable understanding of human emotions. Establishing structure with their humans is key in helping Havaneses reach their full potential. Regular training, interaction, and mental stimulation helps Havaneses display their impressive persistence and side-splitting sense of humor. They’re also considered an ideal family pet due to their gentle nature and can often be seen close to their human companion.
