Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a toy breed of dog, which are small in physical size but big in personality. They are a highly affectionate breed that is highly intelligent and loyal to their owners. They are part of the Bichon family, which includes Bichon Frise, Coton de Tulear, and Maltese. They originated in Cuba and are also known as Cuban Bichons or Cuban Silk Dogs. Their coats are soft and silky and can come in a range of colors including white, cream, pearl, and champagne.
Havaneses are indeed considered to be hypoallergenic. These small, lively dogs are prized for being gentle and agreeable companions, as well as for having a low-dander coat that makes them a great choice for people with allergies. As with all breeds, individual reactions may vary, but these dogs have an exceptionally low potential to cause an allergic reaction. While all the breed's individual hairs have the same anatomy, the short and smooth coat reduces the number of hairs that can cause an allergic reaction.
Yes, Havaneses have somewhat unique dietary needs when compared to other breeds. They are small dogs and don't require as many calories as larger breeds, which makes it important to choose a high-quality diet that's free of fillers and other low-quality ingredients. They also do better when given higher-quality proteins as their primary source of nutrition. Additionally, Havaneses have sensitive stomachs that can become upset with certain foods, so it is important to work with your vet to determine the best dietary plan for your pup.
Before getting a Havanese, you should invest in certain essentials for your new pup. Grooming tools such as a brush, nail trimmers, shampoo, and conditioner, and perhaps a professional groomer visit now and then are all must-haves. You'll need a comfortable and appropriate-sized bed for your pup to sleep on that is also durable enough to last. A collar for leash walking is also important, along with a harness and a 4-6 foot leash.
The size of a Havanese puppy varies significantly as they can reach a maximum of 9 to 11 inches when mature. Generally they weigh anywhere from 7 to 13 pounds; however, genetics and nutrition will be the two primary factors that will determine how large your Havanese pup will grow. On average, most puppies of this breed tend to reach full adult size between 8 to 12 months with the average weight for a full grown Havanese to typically fall between 8 to 10 pounds.
The amount of time you should walk your Havanese depends greatly on several factors, including your dog's age, health and activity level. Generally speaking, all dogs should get at least some exercise each day, and Havanese are no exception. Longer walks of 30-45 minutes two to three times a day are recommended to ensure your pup maintains a healthy weight and stays in good physical condition. For senior Havanese, shorter walks of 10 15 minutes several times throughout the day can help them stay active in their later years.
Havaneses are extremely friendly and intelligent dogs, making them great candidates for getting along with other pets. These dogs are very playful and can form strong bonds with pets of the same breed or from other species, given patience and positive reinforcement. With proper socialization as a pup, Havaneses should respond positively to the presence of other animals. Generally, they get along with most animals but can be wary of strange pets, so it is best to introduce them to each other gradually and in a controlled atmosphere.
Training your Havanese will allow you to maximize its potential. It is important to begin training your Havanese as soon as possible in order to establish a strong bond with your pet. One way to start is by reinforcing basic obedience commands such as sit, stay and come. Start with small treats and verbal praise each time your pup successfully obeys a command. As your Havanese succeeds in each command, you can begin to increase the difficulty of the tasks.
