Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small-sized, bright dog breed with a lively temperament. They are part of the Bichon family and are also known as a Bichon Havanaise, or Havana Silk Dog. This breed, originating in Cuba, is a comparatively new breed and is currently popular as a companion and lap dog. Characterized by a rounded head, dark, expressive eyes, abundant, silky white coat and a cheerful expression, a Havaneses is known for its companionship and intelligence.
Havaneses can be hypoallergenic depending on their particular lineage. Though they do not have a natural hypoallergenic coat, Havaneses do not tend to shed much, so there may be fewer allergens than with some other breeds. In order to create a hypoallergenic Havaneses, breeders often cross the Havaneses with the Bichon Frise or other hypoallergenic breeds.
Havaneses typically eat a variety of different types of food. Their diet can include commercial wet and dry dog foods, as well as human foods such as chicken, steak, fish, eggs, oatmeal, and fresh produce. They also require a variety of nutrients, such as protein, fat, and carbohydrates. To stay healthy, Havaneses benefit from raw and cooked fruits and vegetables, as well as supplements like vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. They may also enjoy treats in moderation, such as all-natural peanut butter, cooked meat and bone broth, and rawhide chews.
Before bringing a Havanese into your family, it is important to have all the essentials you need prepared in advance. Your pet will need a comfortable bed, chew toys, food and water dishes, a leash and collar, food, grooming tools, puppy pads, treats, and a safe place to exercise such as a fenced-in yard or dog park. Additionally, you want to stock up on pet health supplies such as flea control, a pet first-aid kit, and a good pet-safe vacuum cleaner.
The size of your Havanese puppy will depend on the particular weight categories delineated by the American Kennel Club (AKC). In general, though, Havanese puppies will usually grow to be an average size that falls into the medium-small category. Generally, an adult Havanese will weigh somewhere between 7-13 pounds, with both males and females typically being of a similar size. It is worth mentioning that despite being a small breed, the Havanese exhibits great agility and strength. Some may find it quite surprising that they can even jump to a fairly significant height.
The amount of time your Havanese needs to walk every day depends on its age and overall health. Generally speaking, an adult Havanese should be walked for about thirty minutes per day, while puppies typically need less due to immature joints and still-developing muscles. However, if your Havanese is particularly active, walks longer than the typical amount will be beneficial for its exercise needs. Monitoring your Havanese’s energy level and activity levels is the best way to determine the amount that your pup should walk each day.
Havaneses are known for their friendly, loving dispositions, which makes them great with kids. They are excellent family dogs who are gentle, outgoing, and smart. Plus, they are eager to please and learn quickly, which make them great playmates. These little dogs are also active, so they can easily keep up with younger children, while still providing loving companionship. In addition, because of their small size, they are far less likely to accidentally hurt a smaller child than a larger breed.
Training a Havanese can feel like a rewarding journey, even though it may not be easy. All breeds of dogs require patience and consistency when teaching them new behaviors. Havanese have a particularly good temperament and are known for their intelligence, making them easier to train than some other more stubborn breeds. Although they are one of the smaller breeds, as long as they are given proper attention and guidance, their ability to learn commands quickly can be a real bonus. However, I would recommend speaking with an experienced trainer or behaviorist if you feel you need extra help.
