Questions & Answers
Havaneses have a unique look compared to other dog breeds. Their fur is very fluffy and come in seven distinct colors black and tan, chocolate and white, red and white, cream, pure white, black and white, and fawn and white. They are also known for having a happy-go-lucky personality, which makes them great family companions. Despite their small size, Havaneses are brave and adventurous. They are also intelligent and easy to train, making them highly trainable. They can also learn tricks and commands quickly.
The Havanese coat is luxuriously long and silky, often wavy or curly. It can come in a variety of colors, ranging from white, cream, gold, black, black and tan, silver, and brown. The coat is double-layered, with the undercoat being close to the skin to keep the dog warm, and the outer coat made of longer, more textured hairs. Havanese coats should be brushed daily to prevent tangling and matting, and professional grooming may be required for a more comprehensive look.
You should not feed Havaneses human food. Human food such as french fries, ice cream, cake, and candy are not good for their sensitive tummies and can quickly lead to serious health issues. An appropriate diet for a Havaneses should consist of premium-quality dog food that meets their nutritional needs. When introducing a brand new food to your Havaneses, it is important to provide small portions and watch your dog’s reaction to ensure they do not experience any gastric discomfort. Feeding your Havaneses table scraps should also be avoided.
Before bringing your new Havanese home, there are some important preparations to make. To ensure your new pup has a comfortable transition to your household, start by getting all of the supplies and grooming materials you'll need; these include food, treats, collar and leash, bed, toys, brushing comb, and extra brushes for long-haired Havanese. Additionally, consider getting your pup groomed before they come home. Additionally, create a safe and comfortable space for them to retreat to when they need some alone time or a break from the family.
Most Havaneses are about 9-12 inches in height, with a small proportion being smaller or bigger. Typically, the average weight for this breed is 7-13 pounds; however, keep in mind that this breed can come in a variety of sizes. Depending on the particular puppy, the variations can range from as small as 4-5 pounds all the way up to 16-18 pounds. As a side note, males generally tend to be larger than females of the same age.
Havaneses are active and social dogs, so they need at least an hour of exercise a day to stay physically and mentally healthy. Daily activities such as walks, play-sessions, and even agility or obedience training can all be beneficial for Havaneses. Depending on the dog's age, breed, and size, more or less exercise may be appropriate; ask your veterinarian for a customized exercise plan for your Havaneses if needed. Enrichment toys and activities are also great for providing additional stimulation to Havaneses.

They are highly intelligent and can quickly form strong bonds with their owners. Havaneses are often regarded as particularly intelligent and clever dogs. They have a natural aptitude for learning new tasks as quickly as possible, and can problem-solve their way out of challenging situations. With proper training and socialization, Havaneses can be incredibly obedient and follow directions with ease. They have an instinctual understanding of human emotion and behavior, and often have an uncanny ability to pick up on vocal ques and body language when compared to other breeds. All of these reasons make them incredibly intuitive and smart pups that thrive in a loving and stimulating environment.
